An Oxnard family is trying to rally back from being ambushed while on a family vacation in Mexico, an attack that left one member of the family dead and others fighting for their lives.

The Ramos family says that on July 31, the two brothers, along with their father and uncle, were driving down a road in the state of Michoacán, after spending the day together when they were ambushed and shot several times.

All four of them were hit. The boys’ uncle was killed and the rest were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The two brothers, Bruno and Jesus, were well-known at Channel Islands High School, and were on the school’s wrestling team. Bruno Ramos graduated from the high school earlier this year, and Jesus Ramos graduated in 2014.

The news of the tragedy hit the Channel Islands family hard.

“It is just, why did it happen to them? You know, they were just the kind of boys that were going to change the world somehow, some way,» said Peter Rivas, a wrestling coach volunteer and employee at Channel Islands High school.

“They are such great guys, and like when you find out what happened to them, you can’t do anything about it.  And if I had the power to make it better, I would, and I couldn’t. I just prayed and hoped we can all come together and help them out,» said Aracely Munoz, a friend of Bruno.

The Channel Islands High School community put on a car wash to help raise money for the Ramos family. They raised more than $3,000.

“We all came together and decided to get a car wash together to help the family. We still have a lot to go but they are family. You can’t leave Channel Islands High School; once you are a Rraider, you know we are always family,» said Rivas.

“We are a family and once a Raider always a Raider. And we are always going to be there for them no matter what,» said Munoz.

The brothers’ cousin, Sonya Marquez, said that Bruno is being treated at a hospital in San Diego, where he is currently in an induced coma, and in critical condition. Jesus is doing well and was recently discharged, according to Marquez.

“They are fighters, they are wrestlers. This is their toughest match yet and I know they can get through it,» said Munoz.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family at www.gofundme.com/familyramos to help the family pay for medical care.
