La Ciudad de Oxnard tiene un nuevo Comandante de Policía, Scott Whitney, se convirtió la semana pasada en el primero en varias décadas en haber nacido y ser criado en la ciudad de Oxnard.
Whitney toma la posición en el OXPD, después de haber servido a la comunidad por más de 25 años, luego que en septiembre la Comandante Jeri Williams dejará ese puesto.
«Mi hermano me convenció de ir en un tour en una de las patrullas del departamento de policía y después de ese viaje a lo largo sabía que esto es lo que quería hacer», dijo Whitney en una ceremonia realizada la semana pasada donde decenas de residentes se dieron cita.
Whitney se unió al OXPD en 1990, se fue abriendo camino en sus filas, y sirvió como sub Comandante durante 9 años antes de tener que asumir el cargo, luego que el asistente del Tesorero de la Ciudad por los últimos 20 meses.
Cuando la ex Jefe, Williams dejara el OXPD para convertirse en la Comandante del Departamento de Policía de Phoenix, Whitney fue nombrado como nuevo Comandante interino.
La ceremonia de la toma de posesión oficial estuvo al tope, decenas de residentes y personalidades locales se dieron cita a la Alcaldía el martes por la noche, donde los presentes aplaudieron el nuevo Comandante por su dedicación y su esfuerzo de ayuda a organizaciones comunitarias.
«Va a estar todo muy bien con él. No tenemos que adivinar. No tenemos a alguien que viene de Los Angeles o se va a otro lugar o a Arizona. Tenemos a un hombre que comprende las necesidades de la comunidad», indicó Brian Ellison, residente de Oxnard.
«Me gustaría decir que el OXPD ya no es el Departamento a temer que lo que era cuando yo crecí en La Colonia. Su relación con la mejora de la comunidad se puede atribuir a Scott, él es una persona de integridad, que es de confianza y respetado por todos los que le conocen. Es dedicado con nuestra comunidad y sirve muy bien», asumió por su parte Pedro Martínez.
El Comandante Whitney indicó que integración comunitaria y lo que él llama “policía comunitaria” son sus prioridades principales.
«La Policía comunitaria significa que como departamento, como Comandante, como oficial, reconocen que habrá algunos sectores y personas de la sociedad que no se tendrá contacto, pero que al mismo tiempo no se tiene miedo de llegarle a esos grupos. Es increíble lo que se puede lograr y la criminalidad que se puede reducir a través de asociaciones comunitarias», dijo el jefe de Whitney».
Así, otras prioridades de Whitney son su enfoque en la reducción de delitos violentos y la seguridad vial o de transito.
«El ciudadano medio está conduciendo muy agresivamente, hay muchos conductores ebrios y quienes no usan el cinturón de seguridad y conducen distraídos. Vamos a incrementar la aplicación de las leyes y el alcance comunitario, que ayudará a salvar vidas. No tengo dudas que salvaremos muchas vidas en 2016 y 2017 debido a la difusión, educación y el cumplimiento de la ley», explicó Whitney.

The City of Oxnard has a new police chief. Chief Scott Whitney is the first Oxnard police chief in several decades actually born and raised in the city. He takes on the position of police chief after serving the community for more than 25-years.
“My brother talked me in to going on a ride along with the police department and after that ride along I knew that this is what I wanted to do,” said Whitney.
Whitney joined the Oxnard Police Department in 1990. He worked his way up the ranks, and served as assistant chief for nine years before being asked to take on the position of assistant city manager for the past 20-months.
When former Chief Jeri Williams left the department for a chief position in Phoenix, Whitney was appointed as the City of Oxnard’s new police chief.
It was standing room only at his official swearing in ceremony Tuesday night.
Audience members in attendance applauded the chief for his dedication to the city and focus on community partnerships.
“We are going to do really well with this guy. We don’t have to guess. We don’t have someone coming in from LA somewhere else or Arizona. We got a guy who understands the needs of the community,” said Oxnard Resident Brian Ellison.
Others like Peter Martínez said that under the new Chief the OXPD will be a trustworthy organization.
“I would like to say that the Oxnard PD is no longer the feared department that it was when I was growing up in La Colonia. Its improved relationship with the community can largely be attributed to Scott. Scott is a person of integrity who is trusted and respected by all who know him. He is engaged with our community and serves it very well,” said Peter Martinez.
Chief Whitney told me community engagement and what he calls community policing is his number one priority.
“Community policing means that as a department as a chief as an officer that you recognize that there is going to be gaps in touch between certain groups and people in the community and you are not afraid to take on those gaps,” said Chief Whitney.
“Its amazing what you can accomplish and the crime that can be reduced through community partnerships.”
Whitney’s other priorities and passion focus on reducing violent crime and traffic safety.
“Average citizens are driving aggressively, driving impaired and not using their seatbelts and driving while distracted. We are going to increase enforcement and community outreach and that is going to save lives and there is no doubt in my mind we are going to save lives in 2016 and 2017 because of outreach, education and enforcement,” said Whitney.
