A. HANCOCK APOYANDO A ESTUDIANTES INDOCUMENTADOS

THOUSANDS GATHERED IN SB CHRISTMAS PARADE

One of Santa Barbara’s oldest traditions continued with the 64th Annual Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade.

The parade’s theme is «Holiday Under the Sea.»

Not only were there big crowds, there were also many entries.

Organizers expected more than 50 thousand people watching the parade on State Street between Sola and Cota Street.

«It’s a great way to get the community together and get into the Christmas spirit,» said Lily Marzicola, a SB High School student.

Highly decorated United States Marine Corps’ Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, known as «Darkhose,» started the procession.

The grand marshals were Cody and Caleb Walker.

They are the brothers of the late actor and former Santa Barbara resident, Paul Walker.

Paul passed away in a car accident three years ago, but since then, his brothers has helped out with charity groups that their brother created and was part of.

A. HANCOCK HELPING ITS UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS

To help ease the uneasy, Hancock College offered a workshop Friday morning to its more than 400 undocumented students about financial aid options and to reassure the group their school stands behind them.

Dozens of students showed up to hear that a letter endorsed by the California university system, the California State university system, and the California Community College System has been sent to president elect Donald Trump, urging him to support undocumented students and their goals of higher education.

The students also were also given tips and advice on how to apply for financial aid, even as undocumented students.

«It just feels really good,» says Ellie Herrera, an undocumented biochemistry major at Hancock College.

«We now know what kind of financial aid we can apply for, and where to get it. It just feels so good to know we’re not alone.»

Raul Aldana, who works in financial aid at the college said many students are fearing for their future and education.

He believes the election of the Republican candidate has many students fearing the end of «DACA,» or the «Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival Program.

This federal program allows some undocumented teenagers and young adults the chance to stay in the country and pursue higher education.

«I think everyone wants to do the right thing. These students aren’t slackers, they just want to work hard and get an education.»

For Mrs. Herrera, Friday morning’s meeting was inspiring.

Another step on the path towards a degree.

«We can make it,» she says. «If we set a goal, we can all make it.»

STABBING IN SM

A bloody stabbing in Santa Maria landed a man in the hospital last Saturday.

Police say it happened at a recording studio on N Broadway. They say a man was robbed and stabbed by a man who was squatting inside.

«Wasn’t something I expected,» witness Todd Longaker said.

Police say two brothers were confronted by a man who was squatting inside the business.

That’s when the suspect robbed one of the brothers for jewelry and cash and then stabbed him in the back, before taking off.

Todd Longaker was working at this Alcoholics Anonymous office when he heard the commotion outside.

Police say, if found and arrested this suspect could face Attempted Murder charges – and if convicted could face life in prison.

«And he’s described as a black male adult, about 30 years of age, thin build, clean shaven, he was wearing dark clothing and either described as a red shirt or a red bandana,» Santa Maria Police Sgt. Marc Schneider said.

Sgt. Schneider says this suspect is likely homeless, should be considered armed and dangerous and broke into the business through a window.

That victim has been released from the hospital and is expected to be okay. If you have any information on who this suspect is contact the Santa Maria Police Department at 805-928-3781.
