En una conferencia de prensa, el Director Ejecutivo del Festival Internacional de Cine de Santa Bárbara, Roger Durling, dio a conocer el póster, así como presentó lo que será la 32ª edición del Festival.

El Festival, que es uno de los más importantes e importantes en la industria cinematográfica, se desarrollará del 1 al 11 de febrero, en diferentes salas de teatro en Santa Bárbara.

«Estamos muy emocionados de tener una gran programación este año. Tendremos más de 200 películas que representen más de 50 países en el Festival», aseguró Durling.

Algo nuevo para este año es la importancia de los documentales en derechos civiles tendrá en el evento.

«Debido a los resultados de las últimas elecciones, este año nuestra sección de’ Documentales de Justicia Social’ mostrará muchas piezas enfocadas en la inmigración. Hemos tenido esta sección siempre pero este año (14) es el año que tendremos más”.

Para el Director era deber del Festival darle más énfasis debido a la posición del nuevo presidente.

“Es importante para la prensa, los artistas, los extranjeros como yo, exponer lo que realmente está sucediendo y defenderse de cualquier tipo de abuso», indicó el Director.

En cuanto al poster, Durling, explicó que la inspiración detrás del cartel de este año es el Teatro Riviera.

«El año pasado lo compramos y será una parte importante en muchos de nuestros programas. Además, es un hermoso edificio que muestra perfectamente la arquitectura de Santa Bárbara», compartió.

Este año la noche de apertura será en el histórico Arlington Theatre con el estreno mundial de “Charged”.

Dirigido por Phillip Baribeau, el documental narra la historia del chef de ascendencia mexicana, amante de las actividades al aire libre, Eduardo García y su recuperación después de ser electrocutado por 2400 voltios de ayuda en el backcountry de Montana.

García, mejor conocido como «el cocinero biónico» le fue amputada el antebrazo y la mano, perdió costillas, masa muscular y casi su vida, pero más importante que lo que perdió es lo que encontró.Así, “Charged” cuenta el extraordinario viaje de Eduardo desde que se levanto en el bosque para convertirse en el hombre que es hoy.

LOS PREMIOS

El SBIFF se ha convertido en un importante escaparate para los ganadores de premios de la Academia, donde casi todos llegan como nominados y semanas después ganan el Oscar.

Este año, el Festival celebra con orgullo algunos de los mejores trabajos del año en el cine.

Primero, Viola Davis presentará a Denzel Washington con el premio “Maltin Modern Master” el jueves 2 de febrero.

Ryan Gosling y Emma Stone recibirán el premio al “Mejor Artista del Año”, moderado por Roger Durling, ser´å el viernes 3 de febrero.

Uno de los eventos más populares es sin duda el «Premio Virtuosos» debido al número de estrellas en una sola noche.

Este año se le concederá a Aaron Taylor Johnson (Nocturnal Animals), Dev Patel (Lion), Janelle Monáe (figuras ocultas, luz de la luna), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Ruth Negga Florence Foster Jenkins) y Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences).

Este premio es un reconocimiento a los actores y actrices emergentes del cine, se llevará a cabo el sábado 4 de febrero.

Casey Affleck y Michelle Williams recibirán el «Premio Cinema Vanguard», el domingo 5.

«El Premio al Mejor Director del Año» tendrá lugar el martes 7 de febrero y será moderado por Pete Hammond.

Isabelle Huppert recibirá el “Montecito Award” el miércoles 8 de febrero.

El residente y actor local, Jeff Bridges recibirá el “Premio American Riviera” el jueves 9.

Todos los homenajes se llevarán a cabo en el histórico Teatro Arlington, excepto el “Variety Artisans”, que se realizará en el Teatro Lobero.

El Festival cerrará con el drama de comedia de época de Lone Scherfig «Their Finest» en el Teatro Arlington el sábado 11 de febrero, la presentación es una premier mundial de la película que saldrá en los cines hasta el 24 de marzo.

In a press conference, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Roger Durling unveiled and presented what will be the poster for the 32nd edition of the Festival.

The Festival, which is one of the most prominent and important festivals in the industry, will run from February 1st to February 11th, at different venues throughout Santa Barbara.

“We are so excited to have such a great line up this year. We will have over 200 movies representing more than 50 countries in the Festival”, said Mr. Durling.

“Due to the results of the last elections and with the new president elect, this year our Social Justice Documentary section will showcase many pieces focusing in immigration,” the Director said.

Mr. Durling, who is from Panama, also stated that those documentaries are very important for the Festival to give a voice and expose what is happening to minorities around the world.

“We have had this section always but this year (14) is the year that we have the most. We thought it was our duty to give it more emphasis due to the position of the new president. Is important for the press, the artists, the foreigners like myself to expose what is really happening and stand against any type of abuse,”, the Executive Director said.

Durling, went on to say that the inspiration behind this year’s poster is the Riviera Theater.

“Last year we bought it and it is going to be an important part of many of our programs. Also, it is a beautiful building that showcases perfectly the architecture of Santa Barbara,” he said.

This year the opening night will take place at the historic Arlington Theatre with the World Premiere of CHARGED.

Directed by Phillip Baribeau, the documentary chronicles the journey of chef and outdoorsman of Mexican descent, Eduardo García and his recovery after being electrocuted by 2400 volts of electricity miles from help in the Montana backcountry. 

García, better known as “bionic chef”, had his hand amputated, lost ribs, muscle mass and nearly his life, but more important than what he lost is what he found.

«Charges» tells Eduardo’s remarkable journey from getting up off the forest floor to becoming the man he is today.

THE AWARDS

The SBIFF has become an important showcase for Academy–Award frontrunners, many of whom have arrived as nominees and gone on to win Oscars.

This year, the Festival proudly celebrates some of the year’s finest work in film. 

First, Viola Davis will present Denzel Washington with the esteemed Maltin Modern Master Award on Thursday, February 2nd.

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone will receive the Outstanding Performers of the Year Award moderated by Roger Durling, on Friday, February 3rd.

One of the most popular events is without a doubt the “Virtuosos Award” due to the number of stellar actors who attend.

This year will be awarded to Aaron Taylor Johnson (Nocturnal Animals), Dev Patel (Lion), Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures, Moonlight), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Ruth Negga (Loving), Simon Helberg (Florence Foster Jenkins), and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences) in recognition of the year’s emerging film artists. 

This event takes place on Saturday, February 4th.

Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams will receive the “Cinema Vanguard Award”, on Sunday, February 5th.

“The Outstanding Director of the Year Award” will take place on Tuesday, February 7th and will be moderated by Pete Hammond.

Isabelle Huppert will be presented with the Montecito Award on Wednesday, February 8th.

Local resident and actor, Jeff Bridges will receive the American Riviera Award on Thursday, February 9th.

All tributes take place at the historic Arlington Theatre except for the Variety Artisans Award, which will be at the Lobero Theatre. ν

The Festival will close with the Lone Scherfig’s period comedy–drama “Their Finest” at the Arlington Theatre on Saturday, February 11 in advance of the film’s March 24 stateside release.
