Con los bellos jardines de la Misión de Santa Bárbara telón de fondo, La Presidenta Rhonda L. Henderson reveló el tema de las “Fiestas Españolas” para este año: “Unidos en Comunidad”.
En el evento de prensa celebrado el miércoles pasado, líderes comunitarios locales rodearon a. Henderson, quien estaba vestida con un atuendo de Fiesta perfecto para la ocasión.
«Cada año, El Presidente de Old Spanish Days tiene el privilegio de elegir un tema para su año, y para mí, ‘Las Fiestas’ siempre ha significado una cosa: ¡Comunidad!”, dijo La Presidente Henderson al hacer el muy esperado anuncio.
El tema es una parte vital de la semana de las celebraciones más populares de Santa Bárbara, mejor conocidos como «Las Fiestas Españolas» y las cuales son consideradas las más grande en su tipo en Estados Unidos.
Este año se celebra la 94ª la cual será del 2 al 6 de agosto.
Henderson, quien se convertirá en solamente la octava mujer en ostentar el cargo, indicó en declaraciones exclusivas a El Latino Costa Central que fue una decisión fácil, porque por generaciones su familia ha conocido muy bien a la comunidad.
«Soy una barbareña de quinta generación. Mi abuela y mi padre formaban parte de Old Spanish Days, así que siempre pensé en el valor y la importancia de la comunidad «, dijo.
Su abuelo Patrick O’Connor llegó a la Costa Central desde Irlanda a principios de 1800 cuando tenía sólo 9 años de edad.
Finalmente se estableció en las afueras de San Luis Obispo, donde comenzó la granja lechera más grande de la zona, en una parte del Rancho Los Osos.
«No he tenido mayor placer en celebrar las raíces de mi familia que servir en la Mesa de los Old Spanish Days durante los últimos diez años y preservar la rica historia del Período de Rancho».
Henderson, que estaba en compañía de su esposo, el abogado Benjamin Feld, también dijo que con su tema ella quiere ser más inclusiva de los diferentes grupos que forman la comunidad local.
«Durante las fiestas celebramos el legado de las culturas indígena, española y mexicana que estuvieron presentes durante los días de rancho y que todavía son una parte importante de la ciudad».
La Presidente, también afirmó que se inspiró en el querido líder comunitario y hermano de la Misión, Virgil Cordano.
«Parecía lógico si quería captar el espíritu del Padre Virgil, compartir una vez más con nuestra comunidad su amor por ‘Las Fiestas’, su sentido de comunidad, de unirnos como unos solos; no hay palabras que ejemplifiquen más y sus propias palabras que tantas veces escuchamos durante ‘Las Fiestas’».
El padre sirvió en la Mesa desde 1963 hasta su muerte en 2008, es el directivo con más tiempo en la historia de la organización.
Por último, aseguró que el tema también sirve como un reconocimiento a todas las organizaciones y voluntarios que hacen posible las celebraciones.

With the beautiful gardens of the Santa Barbara Mission as a background, La Presidente Rhonda L. Henderson unveiled this year’s Fiesta theme: Unity through Community.
In the press event held last Wednesday, local community leaders surrounded Mrs. Henderson, who was dressed in Fiesta attire, perfect for the announcement.
“Each year, El Presidente for Old Spanish Days has the privilege of selecting a theme for the coming year, and for me, Fiesta has always meant one thing: Community!,” said La Presidente Henderson in making the much-anticipated announcement.
The Fiesta theme is a large part of Santa Barbara’s summer week-long Old Spanish Days festival, better known as “Fiestas” considered the largest of its kind in the United States.
This year marks the 94th edition of Fiesta, and it runs from August 2-6.
La Presidente said to El Latino Central Coast that it was an easy decision, because generations of her family know the community pretty well.
“I am a fifth generation Santa Barbarian. My grandmother and my father were part of Old Spanish Days, so I was always taught the value and importance of the community,” she said.
Her grandfather, Patrick O’Connor, arrived to the Central Coast from Ireland in the early 1800’s when he was only 9-years old.
He ultimately settled just outside of San Luis Obispo where he started the largest dairy farm in the area on a part of the Los Osos Rancho.
“I have had no more enjoyment in celebrating my family roots than serving on the Old Spanish Days Board for the past ten years and preserving the rich history of the Rancho Period.”
Mrs. Henderson, who was accompanied by her husband, local attorney Benjamin Feld, also stated that with her theme she wants to be more inclusive of the different groups that forms the local community.
“During Fiestas we celebrate the legacy of the Native American, Spanish and Mexican cultures that were present during the rancho days and still are a big part of the city,” she said.
La Presidente, also affirmed she was inspired by the beloved community leader and Mission friar, Virgil Cordano.
“It seemed logical if I wanted to capture the spirit of Father Virgil, to once again share with our community his love for Fiesta, his sense of community, of coming together as one; no words exemplify that more thanhis own words that we so often heard during Fiesta.”
Father served on the Fiesta Board from 1963 until his death in 2008, he is the longest serving Director in the organization’s history.
She also said, that this year’s theme serves as a recognition of all of the organizations and volunteers that make the celebrations possible.
“The Fiesta family is large and it extends well past our Board to our over 3,500 volunteers, our sponsors, the Mission, our City and County, our first responders, the dance studios, the artists and the over 30 non-profits that stage their fundraisers around Fiesta.”
