Three senior opposition politicians in Mexico have been targeted by spyware on their mobile phones, researchers say.

An internet watchdog based in Canada, Citizen Lab, said the surveillance software is only sold to governments.

Last week, Citizen Lab also said that 12 journalists and human rights lawyers had been targeted.

At the time, the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, described accusations that the government was involved as false.

Mr. Peña Nieto said surveillance software was only used for matters of national security and for fighting organized crime.

He added that he had ordered an investigation by the attorney general’s office.

Citizen Lab said the head of the Conservative National Action Party (PAN), Ricardo Anaya, a PAN Senator, Roberto Gil Zuarth, and the party’s communications secretary, Fernando Rodriguez, were targeted.

«There is strong circumstantial evidence implicating the government of Mexico», the watchdog said.

The software, known as Pegasus, was sold to Mexican federal agencies by the Israeli company NSO Group on the condition that it only be used to investigate criminals and terrorists.

It is usually sent in a text message to a smartphone.

If the person taps on it, the spyware is installed, and huge amounts of private data – text messages, photos, emails, location data, even what is being picked up by the device’s microphone and camera – are hacked.

CUBANS DETAINED IN FINLAND

A Finnish court has cut the jail terms of four members of Cuba’s national volleyball team found guilty of rape, and released a fifth.

The five were jailed in September for raping a Finnish woman during a World League tournament in Tampere.

The appeals court in the south-western city of Turku reduced the five-year sentences handed down to four of them.

The longest of the revised prison terms is that of Osmany Uriarte Mestre – four years. Luis Sosa Sierra was acquitted.

Ricardo Calvo Manzano will now serve three-and-a-half years, team captain Rolando Cepeda Abreu two-and-a-half years and Alfonso Gavilan one year and three months.

They were detained in the southern Finnish city on 2 July after a woman said she had been raped at a hotel. The men denied the accusation.

The team had been taking part in a tournament ahead of the Rio Olympics when the rape took place at their hotel.

In September the Tampere court heard that two of the players had met the woman in a nightclub in the hotel basement.

She later went to the room of Uriarte Mestre and consented to sex.

However, Uriarte Mestre was then said to have texted the other men without the woman’s knowledge.

They entered the room and subjected her to a lengthy ordeal and held her by the hair to prevent her leaving.

When she was eventually allowed to leave, she complained to the hotel receptionist who called police.

The Cuban players were found guilty of aggravated rape and ordered to pay €24,000 in compensation to the victim.

VENEZUELA BANNED ITS ATTORNEY GENERAL

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has banned the attorney general from leaving the country and frozen all of her assets.

The court, which is dominated by government loyalists, said Luisa Ortega Díaz had committed serious errors.

Ms. Ortega, once a staunch government ally, broke ranks in March when she said an attempt by the Supreme Court to strip the opposition-controlled Congress of its powers was unlawful.

Critics believe President Nicolás Maduro is trying to push Ms Ortega out.

The move comes amid growing political turmoil in Venezuela.

According to reports, the accusations against her refer to the appointment of judges.

The Supreme Court recently transferred Ms. Ortega’s powers of investigation to the national ombudsman.

On Wednesday, she strongly criticised President Maduro following an incident in which a stolen police helicopter flew over government buildings in the capital, Caracas, dropping grenades and firing shots.

Mr. Maduro called it a «terrorist attack» but Ms Ortega said Venezuela was suffering from «state terrorism» due to the harsh response by authorities to anti-government protests.

The suspected pilot, a rogue elite police officer identifying himself as Oscar Pérez, posted Instagram videos admitting the attack and calling on Venezuelans to rise up against the government.

Later the helicopter was found near the north coast in the state of Vargas. There was no sign of the pilot.
