Based in Atlanta, Georgia Habitat for Humanity is a charitable, non-profit organization that operates in multiple countries around the world, helping low income people to become homeowners.

In some communities they build homes, in others in infrastructure works such as drinking water wells, drainage, housing maintenance, etc.

In the spring of this 2017, eight low-income families received their respective homes on Trinity Lane in Santa Paula, almost at the same time, a new project began at the corner of First and Hayes streets in the neighborhood known as «La Colonia» of Oxnard.

At the location, the construction of six houses began, three two bedrooms and three others that will have three bedrooms, both models with two bathrooms, kitchen, living room, in a plan of a single floor, which will be delivered to families in the summer 2018.

Last Thursday Supervisor of the 5th District of Ventura County, John Zaragoza visited the construction site in La Colonia, where several volunteers enjoyed the visit, taking pictures and sharing coffee and donuts with him.

«I feel very happy about the progress of construction,” said the Supervisor.

Rachel McIver. Director of marketing and communications for Habitat for Humanity in Ventura County, explains that the construction of these houses is thanks to funds of the City of Oxnard.

«These houses will have to be given to 6 families that will be selected from a large list of applicants or others who see in this the almost only opportunity to become homeowners,» Said Ms. Mclver.

The Director added that it is very pleasant when the keys are given to a new family.

“In some cases, like the one selected from Santa Paula, is a 4-member family who had lived for a long time in a single room, now they will own their own home, and that’s a great joy and satisfaction.»

The Director also indicated that Habitat for Humanity gets help by funds from mortgage payments that owners of previous projects make.

As Ms. Mclver explains, the selected families have to meet several requirements: be a low income family, but can afford a reasonable mortgage, because although these homes have a lower cost than market prices, the families will still have to make payments, which requires a family investment to obtain it, they also have to collaborate with 500 hours of work on the construction site.

The director also comments that on the construction site come many volunteers from local construction workers, as well as contractors who use the site as a training place for their new employees.

As well as staff of churches and charitable organizations donate their work.
