The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD) announced today that a County doctor’s practice was shut down after public health officials said a patient may have gotten hepatitis C at the office.

The authorities informed through a press release how people started getting notified Monday that they could have been exposed to hepatitis B, C and even HIV.

The Health Department identified Dr. Allen Thomashefsky as the doctor involved in the investigation.

«If you get a letter, go get tested,» said Dr. Charity Dean, with the SBCPHD.

As of now, there is only one person with hepatitis C. However, the other patients are being asked to also be tested for hepatitis B and HIV because the viruses spread in the same way.

Mr. Dean said the physician had a specialty practice where adult patients had elective procedures.

At the same time the health officials stated that more than 350 letters were mailed out to patients, notifying them they may have been exposed in the last 10 months.

The investigation has been underway since February when a patient told the Health Deparment the virus may have come from an injection or procedure at that office.

«Our goal in this investigation is to identify any cases who may have been infected at the practice and were not previously diagnosed,» said Mrs. Dean.

Health officials went to the doctor’s office and witnessed unhealthy medical practices that put people at risk.

«It’s something that was significant enough to expose patients to other patients blood,» said Dr. Dean.

The one-physician office was shut down in March with the cooperation of the doctor.

Now comes the task of identifying hundreds of patients, health authorities said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent investigators to the county to help look through medical charts.

«There’s going to be a second wave of this investigation where we are actually going back through medical records for the past seven years so there will be more notifications coming out,» finished Mrs. Dean.
