Un video se ha vuelto viral en Facebook y muestra cómo varios miembrs de la Policía de Santa María (SMPD), arresta a un hombre y a lo que muchos le llamaron abuso de autoridad.
El SMPD asegura que está investigando el incidente.
Las imágenes captadas por una residente de una vivienda cercana a la calle donde se dio el arresto, muestran a un hombre en el suelo con vehículos policiales a su alrededor mientras los oficiales le gritan instrucciones.
El hombre, quien ya se había entregado, levanta la cabeza del suelo cuando la policía dispara un proyectil que emitió un gas blanco a su lado. Entonces un oficial se acerca al hombre y se sube a su espalda, y le golpea fuertemente con uno de sus codos,
Inmediatamente más oficiales se involucran, y ya cuando está en el suelo, se aprecia como otro oficial se acerca con un perro policía, y le acerca para morderle la pierna derecha del hombre.
Los oficiales parecen lanzar más golpes antes de que termine el video, en lo que muchas personas, en redes sociales, sobre todo en Facebook, han llamado como un verdadero abuso policial.
“Ya había acatado las ordenes. ¿Por qué le pegan si ya se había rendido e hizo todo lo que ellos querían. Se ve la mala intención de estos salvajes (policías)”, decía el usuario Javier Martínez en un grupo de Facebook del Condado de Ventura, hasta donde llegó la noticia como pólvora el domingo por la noche.
Otros como, Mayra Zepeda, lo llamaron “como un ejemplo de racismo que lleva la policía con las minorías”.
El SMPD, por su parte informó que el hombre conducía alrededor de autos detenidos por una señal de alto en la esquina de Boone y Western, y se trasladó en el carril opuesto y no se detuvo en la señal.
Cuando una oficial alcanzó el la camioneta SUV negra del hombre, dijo notar otras infracciones.
El automóvil continuó conduciendo por varias cuadras antes de detenerse finalmente en West Barrett.
«Creo que algo a considerar es que ese video es solo una pequeña parte del panorama general. [El departamento] lo investigará desde un punto de vista de tácticas, entrenamiento y equipo, para ver si nuestro los oficiales usaron las tácticas apropiadas», indicó el teniente Jesse Silva.
El SMPD siempre inicia una investigación cada vez que está involucrado el uso de la fuerza. La investigación podría tomar un par de semanas. El teniente Silva señaló que el informe será enviado al Jefe de Policía para su revisión.
Éste finalmente decidirá si se violó alguna ley y si los oficiales involucrados deberían enfrentar consecuencias.
Se desconoce si el hombre en el centro del video permanece bajo custodia policial.
El SMPD sí informó que el individuo de unos 40 años, de acuerdo a lo que se ve en el video, fue arrestado por conducir bajo la influencia y resistirse al arresto. También puede enfrentar otros cargos.
Se desconoce en este momento el alcance de las lesiones del hombre.

A video has gone viral on Facebook, showing how Santa Maria police arrested a man.
The department says it is investigating the incident.
The video shows a man on the ground with police vehicles around him while officers shout instructions to him.
The man lifts his head off the ground when police shoot a projectile that emitted a white gas next to him. It seems that the man was abiding the officers’ instructions.
Then an officer approaches the man, climbs on his back and start hitting him with one of his elbow in the man’s face and head.
More officers become involved. When it appeared the man has surender another agent comes and place a police dog to bite the man’s leg.
Officers appear to throw more punches before the video ends.
The disturbing video it went viral on social media, where many community members, especially on Facebook, said this was a clear example of abuse of power by the officers.
“He had already complied with the orders. Why do they hit him if he had already given up and did everything they wanted too. You can see the evil abuse of these savages (officers),” said Javier Martínez in a Facebook group in Ventura County, where the news spread as gunpowder on Sunday night.
Others, like Mayra Zepeda called it «an example of racism that the police have against minorities.»
SMPD said the man was driving around cars stopped for a stop sign at the corner of Boone and Western, merging into the opposite lane of traffic and not stopping at the sign.
When a patrol officer caught up to the man’s SUV, he noticed other infractions. The car continued to drive for several blocks before finally stopping on West Barrett.
“I think something to consider is that that video is just a small portion of the big picture,» said Lt. Jesse Silva. «[The department] will investigate it from a standpoint of tactics, training, and equipment, to see if our officers used the proper tactics.”
SMPD always launches an investigation whenever use of force is involved. The investigation could take a couple of weeks. Lt. Silva said the report will be sent to the Chief of Police for review. He will ultimately decide whether any policies were violated, and if the officers involved should face consequences.
It is unknown if the man at the center of the video remains in police custody. He was arrested for driving under the influence and resisting arrest. He may face other charges as well.
It is unknown at this time the extent of the man’s injuries.
