SM TOYS R US PERMANECERA ABIERTA

DANGEROUS MAN FROM SM ARRESTED

A Santa Maria man is arrested for leading police on a pursuit from Lompoc to Santa Ynez, according to the SB County Sheriff’s Office (SBCSO).

The pursuit reportedly occurred on Sunday, March 4, when Jose Garcia, 40, of Santa Maria led police on a chase in Lompoc onto eastbound Hwy 246 but ended in the interest of public safety.

Sheriff’s deputies then spotted the vehicle as it entered Buellton, where they then pursued Garcia through Solvang and into Santa Ynez.

Due to Garcia’s reported reckless driving, the pursuit was once again called off.

An investigation by the Lompoc Police Department, Sheriff’s Narcotics detectives and members of the Compliance Response Team (CRT) led to an arrest warrant for Garcia.

He was arrested Thursday, March 8in the 3500 block of Dogwood Court in SM.

Garcia was on active Post-Release Community Supervision at the time of the alleged pursuit.

He now faces several other charges including resisting a peace officer with force/violence, carrying a firearm and felony evading in a vehicle.

Because of his criminal history, the SBCSO was requested to serve the warrant.

He has been booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.

A NEW STATE GUN LAW COULD BE APPROVED

On Thursday California lawmakers announced bill AB-3 that would raise the age limit from 18 to 21 to buy long guns like rifles and shotguns, but someone already have to be 21 to buy a handgun.

«If we’re going to tell 18 year olds that they can’t buy a gun because they’re not mature enough to have a gun, then maybe they shouldn’t vote, maybe they shouldn’t go into the military.. I mean that’s a strong point right there for us to consider,» said Joe Degeus, Manager of Tacti-Cool Guns and Gear in Santa Maria.

Degeus respects that lawmakers are trying to create legislation to save lives, but he would like to see them become more knowledgeable about the weapons they’re talking about.

«They’re looking at this [A-R bullet] as the evil weapon, an evil round that can do bad things. The truth of it is – any of these weapons could be used for bad things but they don’t act on their own; it’s the person behind that pulls the trigger and makes this thing work,» Degeus explained

Santa Maria resident Joseph Timmons sees it differently however, telling us: «Better safe than sorry. Keeping guns out of the hands of people under the age of 21 is a good idea. They don’t have the maturity to be able to handle a firearm outside of supervision like say in the military.»

Timmons feels young adults have no need for the weapons in general.

«What does someone under 21 need with a riffle or handgun right now? It’s not like we’re having a revolution in the streets. It’s just a matter of safety and it’s concerning,» Timmons said.

The call to raise the age to buy firearms is gaining support in Congress as well as with major retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walmart, but this bill has quite a ways to go before it becomes a law.

SM TOYS R US TO REMAIN OPEN

On Friday, Toys «R» Us released a list of stores that will be closing their doors for good – some reports say as soon as next week.

It’s a closure that’s hard for some families to think about.

«It’s actually quite heartbreaking to hear because there’s not many stores that are structured for children anymore, everything is via internet,» said shopper Brenda Robbins.

It’s no secret that online shopping has made it difficult for toy stores to stay in business but some shoppers say Toys «R» Us offers something the internet can’t.

«You can buy anything on the internet but you can’t physically walk into a store, look at items for children and see the smiles on their faces when they see something that they would actually like to have,» Robbins said.

«[My daughters] have their chore money [with them]. They’ve been working pretty hard and all they want to do is buy their own toys and not do it online,» said shopper Preston Vogt.

While Toys «R» Us’s website says they’re just doing a financial restructuring after filing for bankruptcy last year, some analysts say it’s likely they’ll be closing all 800 of their stores.

Shopper Brenda Robbins hopes Toys «R» Us will think about all of the kids, telling us: «If anybody would listen and take it to heart – this is all about the kids. It’s a near and dear store.»

It’s still unclear when these closures will happen and if the list will grow.

WOMEN ARRESTED FOR CHILD ANNOYING

A woman from Camarillo has been arrested for Child Annoying after an incident at Camarillo Heights Elementary School.

A parent advised Camarillo Heights Elementary School staff that their child had been befriended by an older unknown female while walking home from school.

According to the parent, the child was given a ride home by the female. The parent did not have a name or address for the female.

Camarillo Police were advised and began investigating the incident. School staff put in place protocols should the subject be seen in the area.

On February 28 around 2:30 p.m.

Denise Dale went into Camarillo Heights Elementary School and stated she was a relative who was supposed to pick up the victim.

School staff immediately contacted Camarillo Police and within minutes several deputies arrived on scene and detained Dale.

After a thorough investigation, Dale was arrested for Child Annoying. Police found that there was no physical contact between the victim and Dale.

Dale was booked into the Ventura County Jail.

The Pleasant Valley School District and Camarillo Police would like to remind parents to speak to their children about ‘Stranger Danger’. Explain that if you do not know someone, then that person is a stranger. The police and school district recommends that if a child should walk to and from school, that they should walk in pairs with a friend and that they should never approach or get into a strangers vehicle.

If you see any suspicious vehicles or activity, you should call the authorities immediately.
