VENTURA ENFORCING POOL CLEANING SAFETY

Summer is nearly a month away, which means the pools at hotels, apartment complexes and water parks will be used regularly.

But The Centers for Disease Control (and Prevention CDC), say they have some concerns.

In a recent study released on Wednesday, the CDC reports pools, and hot tubs are responsible for one-third of swimming-related diseases.

“We have a number of pools that are closed for problems of chlorination,” said Douglas Beach, the manager of the recreational health program at Ventura County.

“But I believe because we are on top of it and closed the pools we don’t get outbreaks. We haven’t had an outbreak in several years.”

Beach says his agents inspect over 2,500 pools throughout the County.

The pools that don’t fit the requirements are immediately closed until the problem is fixed. Just like the pool at Motel 6 off Seaward in Ventura.

Their chemicals used were not within an acceptable range.

“The ones that are closed are normally not closed for more than 24 hours or so because the owners take care of things quickly and they want to get the pools reopened,” said Beach.

“We increase our cleaning arrangement with our pool cleaner. He will come twice a week,” said Steven Toliver.

Toliver who is the president of the homeowners association says they’ve never had an outbreak or issue with any of their pools. He says that’s because the County is strict in its enforcement.

“We have automatic chlorinators that we use in the pool system and he will tell us if they need any type of maintenance or repair,” said Toliver.

That isn’t the case outside the county. From 2000-2014, the CDC says the U.S. recorded 493 disease outbreaks tied to pools and hot tubs.

There were 8 deaths and nearly 2,700 illnesses due to parasites and bacteria lurking in the water.

“If you go to a pool and the water is cloudy and you can not see the bottom of the pool that is a good indication that there is a problem,” said Beach.

FIESTA PIN & POSTER UNVEILED

After much anticipation, 2018 Old Spanish Days La Presidente Denise Sanford unveiled this year’s Fiesta poster and pin alongside the original 7-decade-old oil canvas painting the posted is based on at ‘La Primavera.»

The event took place Saturday at the SB Carriage and Western Museum, and is just one of several Old Spanish Days events leading up to the kick-off of Fiesta on August 1.

This year’s poster consists of Jesus Helguera’s (1910-1971) oil on canvas painting «La Bamba,» created in the late 1940’s. The alluring imagery of the posted embodies, for many, the soul of Fiesta and this year’s theme, «Celebrating Traditions.»

«I first saw the image I selected for my poster in 2008. I was immediately drawn to it because it looked happy, and was very traditional to me. I thought if I ever became La Presidente I would want that as my poster,» said Sanford,

«One of the important touches I wanted on my poster this year was to have theme represented in Spanish,» continued Sanford. Meanwhile, the 2018 Fiesta pin takes La Bamba’s main dancers and incorporates them into onto the pin itself with the Santa Barbara County Courthouse standing tall in the background.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES HELPING IN LOMPOC

The Lompoc Catholic Charities is accepting applications for emergency home repairs.

One beneficiary is a disabled veteran, who said her house’s condition was affecting her health.

Francis Wisniowski bought a 1958 house in Lompoc a couple of years ago. Soon her and her husband, who is also a disabled veteran, found out the property had one big problem –its large windows.

“[When it rained] in the house….[we had] puddles of water on the floor. And then you get mold and then the wind blows and it’s so loud that you can’t sleep,” Wisniowski said.

On top of that, she said the glass wasn’t very resistant.

“Our neighbors would be out mowing the lawn or we just have a lot of wind here in Lompoc and it would blow dirt straight through the window. The window didn’t stop anything. It was like you might as well be outside.”

It was so bad, the mother of two said it was affecting her health.

“I have an auto immune disorder and I’m hyper allergic to a lot of things.”

The disabled veteran said she didn’t qualify for financial assistance through several agencies.

Then, she heard about the Lompoc Catholic Charities’ home emergency repair program.

Within months, Francis, her husband and their two kids finally got their windows repaired.

A job that would’ve been a hefty check for the family.

“Out of pocket probably [would’ve been] around $5,000,” said Jose Alfredo Orozco, the contractor hired by the Catholic Charities for the repair.

“They went above and beyond. The windows are amazing. It feels like a home,” said Wisniowski.

Lompoc Catholic Charities volunteers are especially glad they were able to help this family.

“It was one of those ones where you felt really good at the end of the day,» said volunteer and former Charities’ board member David Winninghan. ν

They are receiving applications from low-income or disabled families in Lompoc in need of an emergency home repair, including mobile homes. More information can be found on their website.
