A partir del miércoles, miles de personas están a punto de descender a teatros y negocios de centro de Santa Bárbara, día y noche, para asistir al Festival Internacional de Cine de Santa Bárbara (SBIFF).
El Festival es un gran impulsor para la economía del área que no podría llegar en un mejor momento, considerando los desafíos con los cambios en la propiedad de locales comerciales y los cambios en los contratos de arrendamiento que han generado preocupaciones entre comerciantes.
Este evento destacado ha sido un plus para muchos propietarios.
«Siempre esperamos el festival de cine todos los años», dijo Chris Getz, gerente general de 1114 Crafthouse and Kitchen.
El restaurante está ubicado en el corazón del distrito de los teatros en el Centro Comercial “La Arcada”, cerca de las calles State y Figueroa.
Están agregando decoraciones y haciendo reservaciones para recepciones antes y después de los eventos.
«Crea un buen aumento entre los locales que salen más, mucha gente de fuera de la ciudad, algunas estrellas de cine. Todos quieren poder salir y experimentar Santa Bárbara y estamos justo en el medio», enfatizó Gretz.
El SBIFF mantiene un flujo constante de personas en la calle, entrando y saliendo de negocios y llenando hoteles locales.
Normalmente es a fines de enero, pero este es un año especial, con las nominaciones al Oscar y los Premios de la Academia en ascenso, llegó antes, del 15 al 25 de enero
«Y debido a que siempre somos el Festival de Cine después que las nominaciones han sido anunciadas, necesitábamos adelantar las fechas», explicó Roger Durling, Director Ejecutivo del SBIFF.
Las nominaciones al Oscar fueron anunciadas el lunes por la mañana, y más de una docena de teatros participarán en el Festival en State Street.
Las multitudes más grandes estarán en el Teatro Arlington para los eventos especiales y homenajes, que tiene capacidad para más de 2300 personas.
Algunos de los eventos ya están agotados.
Roger McCririck, quien administra la tienda de joyería «Silver and …» al lado de los Teatros Metro, explica que no puede llegar en mejor momento, puesto que enero siempre es lento para los negocios.
“Es un buen momento para que entren y genera mucha gente aquí en la ciudad».
La tienda ha estado abierta por 27 años, tiene vitrinas justo donde se reúnen los fanáticos del cine a hacer línea antes de entrar al Arlington.

El Festival ofrece diariamente una película gratis a las 2 p.m. en el Teatro Lobero, que tiene 600 fanáticos del cine.
Además, habrá películas gratuitas de fin de semana de Apple Box en el Arlington.
MUERTE DE NIÑO FUE ACCIDENTAL
Aproximadamente a las 2:00 p.m. el domingo 5 de enero, oficiales del OXPD respondieron a un hogar en la cuadra 3400 de Olds Road con respecto a un niño herido.
Un niño de cuatro años fue llevado al Centro Médico Regional de San Juan, donde sucumbió a sus heridas.
La investigación de OXPD ha concluido que la muerte del niño fue un ahorcamiento accidental, la Oficina del médico forense del Condado de Ventura es la cual investiga todas las muertes que ocurren en Oxnard.
El subdirector Jason Benites declaró:
«Tras los esfuerzos de los primeros en responder, el propósito de la investigación del OXPD fue determinar qué conjunto de circunstancias condujeron a este trágico accidente. En el OXPD se entristece que los padres y hermanos de este niño estén de luto por la pérdida de su ser querido».
Las estadísticas del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad, el Centro Nacional para la Prevención y Control de Lesiones, y otras fuentes indican que durante cada año en los Estados Unidos, alrededor de 2,000 niños menores de 14 años mueren como resultado de una lesión en el hogar.
Las muertes no intencionales por lesiones en el hogar de los niños son causadas principalmente por incendios y quemaduras, asfixia, ahogamiento, armas de fuego, caídas, asfixia y envenenamiento.
El OXPD quiere recordar a los padres que revisen sus hogares en busca de objetos que puedan presentar riesgos potenciales para sus hijos.
Los artículos que pueden presentar un peligro para los pequeños pueden incluir cosas como artículos de limpieza no asegurados, cordones de persianas o cortinas, muebles no asegurados que los niños puedan subir, camas, u otros muebles colocados al lado de ventanas y enchufes eléctricos descubiertos.
Además, las autoridades alientan a aquellos que tienen niños pequeños a que bajen a la altura de la vista de sus hijos y pasen por todas las habitaciones para ver con qué se pueden dañar sus hijos.
HOMBRE CONDENADO POR ASESINATO
El Fiscal de Distrito del Condado de Ventura, Gregory Totten, anunció el lunes que Gregorio Santacruz, de 40 años, fue sentenciado a 22 años por abusar sexualmente de dos niñas en Oxnard.
En enero de 2016, una niña de 14 años le reveló a su maestra de secundaria que Santacruz la había molestado en múltiples ocasiones, entre las edad de 9 y 12 años, por lo que funcionarios escolares notificaron al OXPD.
Las investigaciones encontraron una víctima más quien aseguró a los detectives que Santacruz la molestó de manera similar entre la edad de 6 y 12 años.
En noviembre de 2019, Santacruz se declaró culpable de tres cargos de conducta lasciva con una menor de 14 años y un cargo de abuso sexual continuo de una menor de 14 años.
El 12 de enero, el juez de la Corte Superior del Condado de Ventura, David Hirsch, ordenó a Santacruz que pagara una restitución a cada víctima por un monto de $25,000, además de condenarlo a la prisión estatal.
La Unidad de Asalto Sexual y Protección Familiar del Fiscal de Distrito del Condado de Ventura procesó este caso.
SOTELO COMPITE POR CONCEJAL EN SM
La campaña para el Concilio de Santa María comenzó oficialmente el lunes por la tarde.
En Oakley Park, Osvaldo Sotelo se convirtió en la primera persona en anunciar su candidatura para el Distrito 1 del Concejo Municipal de Santa María, que se presentará a elecciones este noviembre.
El Distrito 1 abarca la porción noroeste de Santa María.
«En primer lugar, soy un Santa Mariano», dijo Sotelo durante el evento de prensa de 30 minutos de duración.
«Nací y crecí aquí. Fui a escuelas públicas aquí. Soy un residente de toda la vida del lado noroeste de Santa María. Me postulo para el Concilio municipal para mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes del Distrito 1, y no sólo del Distrito 1, pero la calidad de vida de todos los residentes de Santa María».
El joven de 28 años actualmente se desempeña como coordinador de servicios juveniles para Goodwill Industries de los Condados de Ventura y Santa Bárbara.
Graduado en 2009 de Pioneer Valley High School y de raíces mexicanas, Sotelo explicó que su campaña se centraría en empleos, vivienda y servicios juveniles.
Como hijo de trabajadores agrícolas inmigrantes, Sotelo enfatizó que comprende los problemas y las preocupaciones de muchos de los residentes en el Distrito y la Ciudad.
«Estas son luchas que realmente me enfrenté. Al comenzar este viaje, espero luchar por nuestras familias que se pasan por alto, como la mía, como la suya, como la nuestra. Juntos podemos asegurar un futuro mejor para todos nosotros. Juntos podemos ser escuchados», acotó Sotelo.
En noviembre de 2018, Santa María celebró su primera elección basada en el Distritos.
Gloria Soto capturó el asiento en el Distrito 3 (Suroeste), mientras que Etta Waterfield ganó en el Distrito 4 (Sureste).
Además del Distrito 1 este año, los votantes también elegirán un Concejal para el Distrito 2 (Noreste), así como un Alcalde, que es electo de manera general y no por Distritos.
Las elecciones serán el martes 3 de noviembre.

Thousands of people are about to descend on theaters, and area businesses, throughout downtown Santa Barbara day and night starting Wednesday for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
It’s an economic boost for the area that could not come at a better time considering the challenges with shifting ownerships and leasing changes that have drawn concerns.
This spotlight event has been a spike for many owners. This year it comes earlier, January 15th through the 25th.
«We always look forward to the film festival every year,» said 1114 Crafthouse and Kitchen General Manager Chris Getz.
The restaurant is located in the heart of the theater district in the La Arcada Court near State and Figueroa.
They are adding decorations, and booking pre and after parties.
«It creates a nice spike with locals that come out, a lot of people from out of town, some movie stars. They want to be able to go out and experience Santa Barbara and we’re right in the middle,» Gretz said.
The Film Festival keeps a steady stream of people up and down the street, in and out of businesses and filling local hotels.
It is normally at the end of January but this is a special year, with the Oscar nominations and the Academy Awards moving up.
«And because we are always the film festival after the nominations are announced we needed to move up,» said Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Executive Director.
The Oscar nominations were announced Monday morning.
More than a dozen theaters will be taking part in the film festival up and down State Street.
The biggest crowds will be at the Arlington Theatre for the special events and tributes. It seats more than 2300 people.
Some of the events are already sold out.
Roger McCririck who manages the «Silver and …» jewelry outlet next to the Metro Theatres said, «January is always slow, it is a good time for them to come in, and generates a lot of people here in town.»
The store has been open for 27 years.
It has displays right where the movie fans gather.
«They usually have to wait an hour before they go to the movies,» said McCririck
That leads to a lot of browsing and buying at the silver store and throughout the area.
«We usually make sure the store is stocked really well. And usually have someone else coming in helping us.»
There’s a free film at 2 p.m. daily at the Lobero Theatre that holds 600 movie fans.
There will also be the free Apple Box weekend films at the Arlington.
CHILD DEATH WAS ACCIDENTAL
At approximately 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, Oxnard Police Department (OXPD) officers responded to a home on the 3400 block of Olds Road regarding an injured child.
A four year-old boy was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
The OXPD investigation has concluded that the child’s death was an accidental hanging, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office, investigates all instances of death that occur in the City of Oxnard.
Assistant Chief Jason Benites stated, “Following first responder’s efforts, the purpose of the Oxnard Police Department’s investigation was to determine what set of circumstances led to this tragic accident. We at the OXPD are saddened that the parents and siblings of this child are mourning the loss of their loved one.”
Statistics from the National Safety Council, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, and other sources indicate that during each year in the United States, about 2,000 children ages 14 and under die as a result of a home injury.
Unintentional home injury deaths to children are caused primarily by fire and burns, suffocation, drowning, firearms, falls, choking, and poisoning.
The OXPD want to remind parents to check their homes for objects that could pose potential hazards to their children.
Items that may present a danger to young children can include things such as unsecured cleaning supplies, cords from blinds or curtains, unsecured furniture that children can climb, beds or other furniture placed next to windows, and uncovered electrical outlets.
Also, the authorities encourages those that have young children in their homes to get down to their child’s height level, and go through every room to see what their child can get into.
MAN SENTENCED FOR MURDER
Ventura County District Attorney Gregory Totten announced Monday that Gregorio Santacruz, 40, was sentenced to 22 years for molesting two young girls in Oxnard.
In January 2016, a 14-year-old girl disclosed to her middle school teacher that Santacruz had molested her on multiple occasions between the ages of 9 and 12 years old.
School officials notified OXPD.
The investigations found an additional victim who told detectives that Santacruz molested her in a similar manner between the ages of 6 and 12 years old.
In November 2019, Santacruz pled guilty to three counts of lewd conduct with a child under 14 years old and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14.
On January 12, Ventura County Superior Court Judge David Hirsch ordered Santacruz to pay restitution to each victim in the amount of $25,000 in addition to sentencing him to state prison.
Ventura County District Attorney’s Sexual Assault and Family Protection Unit prosecuted this case.
SOTELO RUNNING FOR COUNCIL IN SM
The campaign for Santa Maria City Council officially kicked off Monday afternoon.
At Oakley Park, Osvaldo Sotelo became the first person to announce their candidacy for Santa Maria City Council District 1, which is up for election this November.
District 1 encompasses the northwest portion fo Santa Maria.
“First and foremost, I am a Santa Marian,» said Sotelo during the 30-minute long press event.
«I was born and raised here. I went to public schools here. I am a lifelong resident of northwest side of Santa Maria. I’m running for city council to improve the quality of life of the residents in District 1 and not only District 1, but the quality of life for the residents of Santa Maria.»
The 28-year-old currently serves as a youth services coordinator for Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.
A 2009 graduate of Pioneer Valley High School and from Mexican roots, Sotelo said his campaign would focus on jobs, housing and youth services.
As the son of immigrant farmworkers, Sotelo emphasized he understands the issues and concerns of many of the residents in the district and city.
«These are struggles that I actually faced myself. As I begin this journey, I look forward to fighting for our families that are overlooked, like mine, like yours, like ours. Together we can secure a better future for all of us. Together we can be heard,» Sotelo said.
In Nov. 2018, Santa Maria held its first district-based election system for City Council.
Gloria Soto captured the seat in District 3 (southwest), while Etta Waterfield won in District 4 (southeast).
In addition to District 1 this year, voters will also elect a city council member for District 2 (northeast), as well as mayor, which is an at-large position.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
