It appears the scam artists posed as district employees and promised to help their children earn college scholarships in return for a fee.

Authorities from the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD), alerted Spanish speaking parents are calling them after realizing they had been scammed.

Barbara Keyani Coordinator of Administrative Services and Communications for the SBUSD said four Latino parents believed that people who knocked on their door were from the district.

“We have learned that someone has been reaching out to families. They are collecting money from them. We understand that they have been saying they work for the District but that is not true at all. They are scamming families,” said Mrs. Keyani.

It appears the scam artists posed as district employees and promised to help their children earn college scholarships in return for a free.

According to the Coordinator the scam artists are collecting social security information and having families sign contracts for significant monthly payments.

But the Coordinator said the district does not solicit.

Mrs. Keyani said that the thieves might be targeting these types of families since many of them are immigrants that sometimes they don’t know exactly how the educational system works.

That is the reason why the district notified parents last week after notifying the local police.

The parents who were preyed upon have children in elementary and middle schools, and some of them lost as much as $200.

Educators said parents and students can get information about scholarships and counseling on campus for free.

“We want to make sure that all the Latino community in our district know all the fees for the information that this thieves are offering is free available and free of charges. If someone call them, please ignore them and call the police department or the District.”
