Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced that Zuberi Kalaikulokahiokalani Sharp, 24, has been charged with murder and causing corporal injury to a child in connection with the death of a male juvenile.
The charges against Sharp include special allegations, such as the use of a deadly weapon and the vulnerability of the victim.
Sharp made his first court appearance on Friday. No plea was entered, and criminal proceedings were suspended pending a competency hearing. The hearing is scheduled for January 2, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in Courtroom 13 of the Ventura County Superior Court.
The incident occurred on December 5, 2024, when Sharp allegedly struck the minor victim with a pickaxe in Newbury Park. Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and found the victim with severe injuries.
The juvenile was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities arrested Sharp shortly afterward in the vicinity of the crime scene.
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Deputy District Attorney David Russell, a member of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Major Crimes Homicides Unit.
Sharp remains in custody without bail.
