Edwards was convicted on November 15, 2024, of attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The jury also upheld all special allegations, including causing great bodily injury (GBI) and the personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing GBI. Edwards admitted to additional aggravating factors, including the crime’s great violence, use of a firearm, and the vulnerability of the victims.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Horlick of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Major Crimes Unit.

“This sentence reflects the serious nature of the defendant’s actions and the immeasurable harm caused to the victims,” said Ms. Horlick. “I hope today’s outcome brings some measure of peace to the victims, knowing justice has been served.”

On July 2, 2019, Edwards and a 17-year-old accomplice fired multiple shots into a residence in Port Hueneme, believing it was home to a man they were targeting. Inside, a family of five was gathered in the living room. At least eight of the 12 bullets struck the home, and three hit family members.

A seven-year-old girl was shot in the head, leaving her paralyzed on her left side and with permanent cognitive damage. Her mother was struck in the foot and thigh, requiring surgery.

Edwards and the juvenile fled the scene after the shooting.

The Port Hueneme Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. They arrested the 17-year-old suspect in July 2019 and recovered one of the two firearms used in the shooting. Evidence led authorities to Edwards, but the second firearm was never found.

The young victim was rushed to a hospital and later airlifted to Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, where she spent three weeks in a coma. After three months in the hospital, she was discharged but left with life-altering injuries, including paralysis and cognitive impairment. Her mother underwent surgery for her wounds and was released the next day.

The juvenile co-offender was charged in juvenile court, and the case remains pending.
