After more than three decades of service, Ventura Police Chief Darin Schindler will retire on Dec. 28, 2024.
Chief Schindler’s 36-year law enforcement career, including 30 years with the Ventura Police Department, has been marked by his dedication to community trust, transparency, and public safety.
Reflecting on his career, Schindler expressed gratitude for his time in Ventura. “I feel immensely grateful for the privilege to serve this community and work alongside such dedicated and talented individuals—both our sworn officers and professional staff,” he said. “Ventura has been more than just a place to work; it’s been home. It has truly been an honor to serve Ventura.”
A Ventura County native, Schindler began his career in 1989 with the Port Hueneme Police Department before joining the Ventura Police Department in 1995. Throughout his tenure, Schindler advanced through the ranks, serving in roles including Major Crimes, countywide narcotics, and Patrol Operations. As a sergeant, he led the Traffic Unit and later oversaw Professional Standards and Training. Promoted to commander, Schindler managed Detectives and Records, introduced body-worn cameras, and eventually became assistant chief, overseeing departmental operations.
Appointed police chief in April 2020, Schindler prioritized community engagement, crime prevention, and mental health initiatives. He introduced the department’s Mental Health Wellness Program, which included annual mental health check-ins and the addition of a therapy dog, Asher, to support officers and community members. Schindler also launched the Police Explorer Program for high school students and revived the Public Safety Community Block Party in 2022, a beloved event that had been dormant for two decades.
“Chief Schindler’s leadership and commitment to fostering a family culture, transparency, and integrity have left a lasting impact on the Ventura Police Department and our community,” said City Manager Bill Ayub. “His dedication to building strong relationships, advancing public safety initiatives, and enhancing the well-being of our residents will be his legacy. Ventura is undoubtedly safer because of his service.”
Schindler holds an Executive Certificate from the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), an Executive Development Certificate from the California Police Chiefs Association, and degrees in criminal justice management and business administration. He is a graduate of the POST Command College and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Policing. Schindler has also served as chair of the Ventura County Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee.
The city will announce an interim police chief in the coming weeks as a nationwide search for Schindler’s permanent replacement continues. Bob Murray & Associates is handling the executive recruitment, and applications are due by Dec. 15, 2024.
Residents are invited to participate in a hybrid community event on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers, 501 Poli Street, or online. The event will provide an opportunity for the public to share feedback on recruitment and selection strategies. An online survey is also available until Dec. 15 at www.surveymonkey.com/r/QPHXVJJ.
