On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the California State Assembly Public Safety Committee will conduct a hearing on Assembly Bill 1831. The proposed legislation, introduced by California Assemblymember Marc Berman and co-sponsored by Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko, addresses the escalating threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the creation of lifelike child sexual abuse images (CSAM). CSAM refers to visual depictions of sexually explicit conduct involving minors.
Other co-sponsors include the California District Attorneys Association, Common Sense Media, SAG-AFTRA, and University of San Diego School of Law Children’s Advocacy Institute.
