Twenty-seven students from the Mark Richardson Center’s Building and Construction program recently explored potential career paths at the Construction Industry Education Foundation’s Trades Day in San Pedro.
The event, set up in a trade-show environment, provided insights into various sectors such as design, sub-contracting, heavy equipment engineering, and construction. Students had the opportunity to learn directly from professionals, gaining hands-on experience with tools and equipment specific to different trades.
“I’m glad that I went on this trip because now I know what I need to achieve to get where I want to be,” said SMHS senior Christopher Garcia. “I know what to expect and what is expected from me. I am really looking forward to learning everything I can this year and getting into the Carpenter’s Union when I graduate in June.”
Glen Holmes, a Building and Construction teacher at the Mark Richardson Center, emphasized the value of the experience. “Trades Day was an excellent opportunity for our students to get in front of multiple construction companies to see exactly what they do and operate tools and equipment specific to various trades,” Holmes said. “They were also informed of what employers were looking for in new entry-level hires as well as tips on improving their resumes so they will be prepared to step right into a construction job upon graduation.”
The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District (SMJUHSD) offers nearly 40 Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, working closely with numerous industry partners to prepare students for the workforce. Trades Day exemplified the district’s commitment to bridging education and real-world career opportunities, providing students with a firsthand look at what lies ahead.
