Después de una extensa búsqueda, el Comité de Old Spanish Days que organiza las Fiestas anunció que han elegido a sus figuras más icónicas para este año: la Espíritu y la Jr. Espíritu de Fiestas.

Ysabella Yturralde será la Espíritu, Savannah Hoover será la Junior Espíritu 2021, mientras que Natalie Mowers y Ariyanna Alcantar terminaron como primeras finalistas de Spirit y Jr. Spirit, respectivamente.

Los organizadores también declararon que este año 10 finalistas de Espíritu y 5 finalistas de Junior Spirit audicionaron para el concurso.

Las audiciones de la Espíritu 2021 se llevaron a cabo en el histórico Teatro Lobero, donde las Fiestas Españolas, la celebración más grande de la Costa Central, comenzó en 1924 y se transmitió en vivo por el Canal 13.

Una retransmisión del evento se transmitirá el sábado 24 de abril a las 7 p.m.

Como parte de sus premios, la Espíritu y la Jr. Spirit de Fiestas recibirán una beca de $600, mientras las finalistas recibirán becas de $300.

Este año, además de dichas becas Ysabella, ganadora de Espíritu (Más 1 acompañante) recibirá un viaje a Sevilla en la región de Andalucía España, para experimentar la cultura flamenca de primera mano.

El viaje incluirá alojamiento por 5 noches, pasaje de avión, participación en un espectáculo de flamenco y lecciones privadas.

“Este generoso premio está patrocinado por la Oficina de Turismo de España en Los Ángeles”, indicó el Comité en un comunicado de prensa.

VCOE CON EL PRIMER SUPERINTENDENTE LATINO

El Dr. César Morales juró formalmente el lunes como el nuevo Superintendente de Escuelas del Condado de Ventura, convirtiéndose en el primer latino y la primera persona de color en ocupar el cargo desde que fue creado en 1873.

En una ceremonia al aire libre en la Oficina de Educación del Condado de Ventura en Camarillo, la asambleísta del estado de California, Jacqui Irwin, tomó el juramento al Dr. Morales.

La ceremonia contó con discursos de los estudiantes a los que ha sido mentor y sus colegas en educación y gobierno.

En sus declaraciones luego de prestar juramento, Morales agradeció a sus padres, quienes emigraron de México, por enfatizar el valor de la educación a lo largo de su niñez.

“Me apoyo en las personas que vinieron a este país con el sueño de una vida mejor”, enfatizó el ahora Superintendente.

El Dr. Morales también reflexionó así sobre las personas de generaciones pasadas a quienes se les negó la oportunidad de realizar sus sueños.

«No es por falta de habilidad, no porque no tuvieran la pasión, sino porque había luchas y obstáculos y había puentes que no existían para ellos», recalcó.

Al comenzar su mandato como Superintendente de Escuelas del Condado, Morales se concentrará en satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes, empleados escolares y distritos escolares del Condado de Ventura en la era post pandemia.

El ahora Superintendente también está comprometido a abordar los problemas de diversidad, equidad e inclusión en las escuelas locales, y ya ha comenzado este trabajo encabezando la creación de un Grupo de Trabajo de Justicia Social que presentará la primera Conferencia de Equidad de VCOE el 24 de mayo.

EL DÍA DE LA TIERRA SE VIRTUAL

Debido a la pandemia de Covid, el Consejo Ambiental Comunitario (CCA) está organizando #CelebrateClimateLeadership, una versión virtual del mundialmente famoso “Festival del Día de la Tierra de Santa Bárbara” que este año estará dedicado a la inspiración, la construcción de comunidades y la acción climática.

«Los activistas, líderes de opinión, organizaciones y miembros de la comunidad que suben al escenario este Día de la Tierra están tomando la acción valiente y contundente que exige este momento», afirmó Sigrid Wright, Directora Ejecutiva del CCA.

El Festival virtual del “Día de la Tierra de Santa Bárbara” es gratuito y contará con tres días (del 22 de abril al sábado 24 de abril) de conversaciones con líderes climáticos, actuaciones musicales, concursos de arte, oradores inspiradores y oportunidades para que las personas aprendan cómo pueden apoyarse en acción en este momento urgente.

Cada día se celebrará un área clave donde los líderes climáticos se están esforzando para hacer el trabajo crítico necesario para combatir la crisis climática.

“Debemos comprometernos, individualmente y como comunidad, a aprender, liderar y tomar medidas audaces todos los días para poner fin a la crisis climática”, recalcó Wright.

Mientras tanto, Kathi King, Directora del “Festival del Día de la Tierra de SB”, agregó: “Si bien nos gustaría estar juntos en el parque, sabemos que la pasión de nuestros participantes saltará de la pantalla, nos unirá para celebrar el liderazgo climático y nos impulsará a un año de acción climática inspirada en la Costa Central».

El evento también apoyará a las empresas y organizaciones locales al incluir una sala de exposiciones virtual interactiva.

Los usuarios tendrán acceso las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana para navegar por esas tiendas y tomar medidas climáticas a través de iniciativas, productos y servicios ecológicos, además de un chat de video en vivo, de 11 a.m. a 12 p.m. y 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m, de jueves a sábado.

La sala de exposiciones permanecerá «abierta» durante 30 días completos, del 22 de abril al 22 de mayo.

MOORPARK COLLEGE CON NUEVO PRESIDENTE

La junta de fideicomisarios del Distrito de Colegios Comunitarios del Condado de Ventura anunció que el Dr. Julius Sokenu ha sido nombrado presidente del Moorpark College en espera de la aprobación del contrato.

Sokenu se ha desempeñado como Presidente interino desde 2019 y ha estado en la universidad durante 14 años.

«El Dr. Sokenu es un líder visionario que apoya a los aproximadamente 14,000 estudiantes de este instituto de educación superor, así como al personal docente y administrativo. Durante su mandato como presidente interino, amplió y apoyó las prioridades institucionales relacionadas con la equidad y la diversidad específicamente para los servicios a las poblaciones desatendidas”, explicó el Canciller del Instituto, Greg Gillespie.

Sokenu se unió al Moorpark College como decano en 2007 y a lo largo de los años ha asumido cada vez más roles de liderazgo.

Tiene 27 años de experiencia de liderazgo extensa y progresiva en la educación de colegios comunitarios con 14 años de supervisión administrativa de la instrucción, servicios para estudiantes, programas no crediticios de educación técnica profesional y relaciones con la comunidad.

Obtuvo un Doctorado en educación con énfasis en currículo y enseñanza de la Universidad de Boston, y una Maestría con énfasis en escritura creativa de la Universidad de Arizona.

“Es un honor servir a Moorpark College como su próximo presidente permanente. El instituto tiene una filosofía de estudiante primero que informa de todas las decisiones y sirve como un toque de atención. Estamos comprometidos con el logro de la equidad de excelencia de los estudiantes y la justicia social y racial. Me enorgullece continuar construyendo caminos hacia la prosperidad para nuestros estudiantes”, enfatizó el Dr. Sokenu.

After an extensive search Old Spanish Days Committee announced that they have chosen their most iconic figures for this year: Spirit and Jr. Spirit of Fiestas.

Ysabella Yturralde will be 2021 Spirit of Fiesta, while Savannah Hoover will be 2021 Junior Spirit, meanwhile Natalie Mowers and Ariyanna Alcantar ended as the runner ups for Spirit and Jr. Spirit, respectively.

The organizers also stated that this year, 10 Spirit Finalists and 5 Junior Spirit Finalists auditioned for the title of Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta.  

The 2021 Spirit Auditions were held at the historic Lobero Theatre where Fiesta began in 1924 and was broadcast live on Channel 13.

A rebroadcast of the event will air on Saturday, April 24th at 7 PM on Channel 13/1013.  

As part of their achievements the Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta will receive a $600 scholarship. And the Spirit and Junior Spirit Runners-up will receive a $300 scholarship.

This year, in addition to a $600 scholarship, the 2021 Spirit of Fiesta (and 1 companion) will receive a trip to Sevilla in the Andalucia region of Spain to experience the Flamenco culture firsthand.

The trip will include accommodations for 5 nights, plane fare, participation in a flamenco show, and private lessons.

“This generous award is sponsored by the Tourist Office of Spain in Los Angeles”, said the Committee in a press release. 

VCOE WITH FIRST EVER LATINO SUPERINTENDENT

Dr. César Morales was formally sworn-in Monday as the new Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, becoming the first Latino and first person of color to hold the office since it was created in 1873.

In an outdoor ceremony this morning at the Ventura County Office of Education in Camarillo, California State Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin administered the oath of office to Dr. Morales.

The ceremony featured speeches from students he has mentored and his colleagues in education and government.

In his remarks after taking the oath, Dr. Morales thanked his parents, who immigrated from Mexico, for emphasizing the value of education throughout his childhood.

“I stand on the shoulders of people who came to this country with a dream of a better life,” he said.

Dr. Morales also reflected on people from past generations who were denied the chance to realize their dreams.

“Not for lack of ability, not because they didn’t have the passion, but because there were struggles and obstacles and there were bridges that didn’t exist for them.”

As he begins his tenure as County Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Morales will focus on meeting the needs Ventura County’s students, school employees and school districts in the post-pandemic era.

The now Superintendent is also committed to addressing diversity, equity and inclusion issues in local schools, and has already begun this work by spearheading the creation of a Social Justice Task Force which will present the first-ever VCOE Equity Conference on May 24.

EARTH DAY GOES VIRTUAL

Due to the Covid Pandemic the Community Environmental Council (CEC) is hosting #CelebrateClimateLeadership, a virtual version of the world famous Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival which this year will be dedicated to inspiration, community building, and climate action. 

«The activists, thought leaders, organizations, and community members coming on stage this Earth Day are taking the courageous, hard-hitting action this moment demands,» stated Sigrid Wright, CEC’s CEO/Executive Director.

The virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival is free and will feature three days, (April 22 through Saturday, April 24) of conversations with climate leaders, musical performances, art contests, inspirational speakers, and opportunities for individuals to learn how they can lean into action at this urgent moment. 

Each day will celebrate a key area where climate leaders are stepping up to do the critical work needed to combat the climate crisis: 

“We must commit – individually and as a community – to learning, to leading, and to taking bold steps every day toward ending the climate crisis,» said Wright.

Meanwhile Kathi King, Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival Director, added, “While we wish we were together in the park, we know that the passion of our participants will jump off the screen, bring us together to celebrate climate leadership, and propel us into a year of inspired climate action on the Central Coast.”

The event will also support local businesses and organizations by including an interactive virtual Exhibit Hall.

Users will have access 24/7 to browse those stores and take climate action through eco-friendly initiatives, products, and services, plus LIVE video chat 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m Thursday – Saturday.

This exhibit hall will stay “open” for 30 full days, April 22 through May 22.

MORRPARK COLLEGE WITH NEW PRESIDENT

The Ventura County Community College District board of trustees announces that Dr. Julius Sokenu has been named the president of Moorpark College pending contract approval. Sokenu has served as the interim president since 2019 and has been with the college for 14 years.

“Dr. Sokenu is a visionary leader who supports the college’s approximately 14000 students and the faculty and staff. During his tenure as the interim president he expanded and supported institutional priorities related toequity and diversity specifically for services to underserved populations,” said Chancellor Greg Gillespie

Mr. Sokenu joined Moorpark College as a dean in 2007 and over the years he has taken on increasing leadership roles.

He has 27 years ofextensive and progressive leadership experience in community college education with 14 years of managerial oversight of instruction student services career technical education noncredit programs and community relations.

He earned a doctorate in education with an emphasis in curriculum and teaching from Boston University and a Master degree with an emphasis in creative writing from Arizona State University.

“It is an honor to serve Moorpark College as its next permanent president. The college has a student-first philosophy that informs all decisions and serves as a clarion call. We are committed to student excellence equity achievement and racial and social justice. I am proud to continue building pathways to prosperity for our students.” said Dr. Sokenu.
