On Monday morning, emergency crews responded to reports of a plane crash in a rural part of Ventura County, about two miles east of Highway 33 in the Los Padres National Forest.

Various media outlets have confirmed that 61-year-old famed film composer James Horner was on board the plane, which was registered under his name.

Fire crews from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and air support were dispatched to the scene to assist other emergency personnel from Ventura County, and Los Padres National Forest that included three engines, two patrols and a chief officer.

According to Capt. Dave Zaniboni with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the emergency call came in just before 9:30 a.m., and a vegetation fire got started as a result of the plane crash. Crews kept the blaze to less than one acre.

The aircraft, described as a 5 to 6 passenger single-engine S312 Tucano MK1 plane, crashed under unknown circumstances. The crash left a large debris field according to officials. It’s unclear how many people were on board the aircraft.

The exact crash site is located in the area of Quatal Canyon Road, near Ventucopa.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.

SEX TRAFFIC IN SB COUNTY

A new report sheds light on the problem of domestic child sex trafficking in Santa Barbara County.

Members of the county’s Human Sex Trafficking Task Force commissioned the report.

The research shows there are 45 confirmed survivors of domestic sex trafficking in the county between 2012 and 2014.

Another 80 children are suspected child survivors of trafficking.

461 children are considered vulnerable.

All of the children are under the age of 18.

“A lot of times these kids, the experience of their life so far, is such that they don’t really identify this as something as egregious as it is. They are certainly not identifying as victims,” said Victim Witness Program Supervisor Rita McGaw.

McGaw said the assessment was needed because the county currently has no tracking system or standardized screening tools in place to identify victims.

There are also few resources to help victims and survivors.

“I think it makes sense that there is a lot more than what’s in that report, which is why we know we need standardized screening tools and standardized assessment. So we can identify these victims when law enforcement picks them up, when they go into juvenile hall and when child welfare sees them,” McGaw said.

The data was gathered from county agencies, including probation, social and mental health services.

The report identifies the traffickers as men ages 18 to 30 and one 19-year-old female.

Six traffickers lived in the county and six were from other areas.

The findings were presented at the County District Attorney’s office on Thursday.

McGaw said the next step is to ask county agencies to work together and come up with a plan to identify and get resources for child survivors.

McGaw said the District Attorney’s Office has applied for a $1 million dollar federal grant to help strengthen the Task Force.

POSSIBLE TB SPREAD IN SB

Sansum Clinic, one of the two largest health provider in Santa Barbara has warned more than 600 patients, who could be at risk of being exposed to tuberculosis.

The clinic sent letters on June 8 to the patients who lately visited the clinic’s Internal Medicine Department location.

According to the health authorities anyone that has been at the clinic, located on  215 Pesetas Lane, between mid-February and May 21, were notifying that a staff member was recently diagnosed with the disease.

As a preventive measure, the clinic advise the addressees of the letters to go to their facilities and get a blood test free of charge.

At the same time, the clinic stated that “those who did not receive a letter should have no been concern”.

So far, there is not any other case of Sansum employees who have worked with the infected one have tested positive for the disease.

Experts said the risk of exposure is minimal, and that the infected staff member is being treated and is in quarantine.

Tuberculosis is spread through the air from one person to another, and the bacteria enter the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, speaks or even sings, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People nearby may breathe in the bacteria and become infected. At the same time, the CDC states that the illness is not spread through contact, such as shaking hands, kissing or sharing food or drink.

Symptoms include: pain in the chest; a cough that last more than 15 days; spilling blood after coughing; being weak;; no desire to eat; chills or fever; and night sweats.

Hepatitis usually attacks the respiratory system, especially the lungs, but it can also cause major damages to the kidney, spine and brain, and in some cases can lead to death.

CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED

Michael Moore was the driver that died in Cottage Hospital due to serious injuries after his vehicle crashed on Saturday night into a eucalyptus tree in the 7900 block of Hollister Avenue, in Goleta.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department is inv¬¬estigating the fatal accident, and said that the 26 year old Goleta man was driving a Lexus LS400 and traveling westbound on Hollister Avenue, near Las Armas Road, when he failed to negotiate a curve.

“After the vehicle struck the median, the driver turned to the right and then over corrected to the left, causing him to slide out of control across the median and eastbound lane of Hollister Avenue,” said Kelly Hoover, Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer.

After crossing the eastbound lanes, the right side of the vehicle struck the tree. The driver was taken to the hospital but died a short time later.

Major extrication was required according to Capt. Dave Zaniboni with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Only the driver and a dog were in the car. No other vehicles were involved.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies took care of the dog, that appeared uninjured, while Animal Control arrived on scene.

It is believed that speed was a factor in the cause of the collision, but further investigation is continuing.
