Oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Oxnard respondieron al Vallarta Market, 1050 South A Street, para investigar un reporte de un posible secuestro.

Un familiar de la supuesta víctima, informó que la madre de la víctima recibió una llamada de sospechosos indicando que habían secuestrado a su hija. Los criminales exigieron que la madre transfiriera dinero para garantizar la seguridad de su hija.

La familiar informó a los oficiales que la madre se dirigía al Vallarta para enviar dinero, desde Western Union, a los sospechosos.

Los oficiales llegaron al lugar y ubicaron a la madre y a su esposo en el estacionamiento, quienes tenían miles de dólares en su poder y se preparaban para transferir el dinero a los extorsionadores.

Los agentes finalmente pudieron ponerse en contacto con la hija y confirmar que las amenazas sólo eran una estafa telefónica.

«Nos gustaría recordarle al público esta estafa telefónica es muy común. Se recomienda al público que sospeche de cualquier llamada cuando la persona que llama, le habla de un problema o una crisis y la única solución es transferir dinero electrónicamente o comprar una tarjeta de regalo prepagada. Si recibe una llamada telefónica sospechosa de esta naturaleza, se le recomienda informar a la policía», dijo el OXPD en un comunicado de prensa.

Según las autoridades, estas redes de estafadores se pueden prevenir si se mantienen bien informados, por lo tanto, piden a la comunidad que comparta cualquier información con amigos, familiares y vecinos.

Dado que este tipo de estafas ocurren más a menudo, el FBI ofrece algunos consejos de prevención para evitar ser víctima de este plan de extorsión.

La agencia federal aconseja estar al tanto de los siguientes indicadores posibles:

Las llamadas entrantes provienen de un código de área exterior.

Las llamadas no provienen del teléfono de la víctima lesionada o secuestrada.

Las personas que llaman hacen un gran esfuerzo para que no cuelgue.

Le impiden llamar o localizar a la víctima «secuestrada».

El dinero de rescate solo se acepta a través del servicio de transferencia bancaria.

ESTAFAS TAMBIEN EN SB

Pero no solo en Oxnard ocurre esta gran ola de estafas.

En Santa Bárbara, el Departamento del Alguacil del Condado (SBCSO)local ha recibido recientemente una gran cantidad de informes en todo el condado en relación con diferentes fraudes telefónicos.

Según el SBCSO, la estafa más activa en este momento es la estafa del Seguridad Social, donde residentes han perdido miles de dólares.

«Esta semana, un residente perdió $11,000 debido a esta estafa», informaron en un comunicado de prensa.

Las autoridades asesoran en la red de estafas de Seguridad Social, que la persona que llama afirma estar con el IRS y, a menudo, proporciona un nombre y un número de identificación.

La persona que llama afirma que el número de seguridad social de la víctima ha sido comprometido y relacionado con alguna actividad criminal.

En un caso, le informaron a la víctima que su tarjeta de seguro social fue encontrado en un automóvil en Texas, junto con algunas drogas y manchas de sangre.

«Además, si no responde, amenazan con bloquear permanentemente su número de seguro social o confiscarán sus cuentas bancarias, lo cual no es cierto», señaló el SBCSO.

Algunos de los consejos de las autoridades para mantenerse alerta, y no convertirse en una de las miles de víctimas que cada año pierden cientos de miles de dólares debido a este tipo de estafas son:

La Administración del Seguro Social nunca llamará para amenazar los beneficios o pedirle que envíe dinero, envíe dinero en efectivo o ponga dinero en tarjetas de regalo.

No tiene que verificar su número de seguro social a ninguna persona que inicie una llamada con usted.

Nunca dar ninguna parte de su número de seguro social, información de cuenta bancaria o número de tarjeta de crédito a nadie que lo contacte.

Las autoridades también mencionaron que con tanta tecnología en el mundo, un estafador puede duplicar el número de teléfono real de la Administración del Seguro Social mediante el uso de una aplicación especial o un programa de computadora.

PIDEN A VANDERBERG COMO CENTRO ESPACIAL OFICIAL

El martes, el Congresista local, Salud Carbajal (CA-24), junto con las Senadora Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) y Kamala Harris (D-CA) escribieron una carta instando a la secretaria de la Fuerza Aérea, Heather Wilson, a designar a la Base de la Fuerza Aérea Vandenberg como sede del Comando Espacial de los Estados Unidos.

«Las misiones y los activos relacionados con el espacio de Vandenberg, así como su proximidad al Centro de Sistemas de Misiles y Espacio (SMC) y numerosos contratistas que apoyan a la empresa espacial de seguridad nacional, incluidas las operaciones espaciales, ofrecen al Comando Espacial ventajas únicas e inigualables”, reseñaron en el documento los tres demócratas.

Este es un movimiento de los políticos para aprovechar el momentum después de que la Fuerza Aérea, el 14 de mayo, anunció las Bases candidatas para el recién reconstituido Comando Espacial de los Estados Unidos como un Comando de Combate Unificado Funcional.

Las seis bases seleccionadas a través del proceso de un plan estratégico de la Fuerza Aérea, son: la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Vandenberg, la Estación de la Fuerza Aérea de Cheyenne Mountain, la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Peterson, la Base de Schriever, la Base de Buckley y el Arsenal de Redstone.

En la carta también mencionan el hecho de que Vandenberg también está cerca del Centro de Misiles Espaciales (SMC, por sus siglas en inglés) en la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Los Ángeles.

Para el, Congresista, que representa a los Condados de San Luis Obispo, Santa Bárbara y parte de Ventura, el CSpOC en Vandenberg ya es un líder en misiones espaciales y en la coordinación militar entre los aliados más grandes de Estados Unidos.

“La extensa infraestructura y la industria existentes de Vandenberg, la hermosa región para atraer talento de primer nivel y las capacidades de lanzamiento probadas lo convertirían en una sede ideal para USSPACECOM. Officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to Vallarta Market, 1050 South A Street, to investigate a report of a kidnapping.

A family member of the purported victim reported that the mother of the victim received a call from the suspects stating they kidnapped her daughter. The suspects demanded that the mother wire money to ensure her daughter’s safety.

The family informed officers that the mother was currently on her way to Vallarta Market to send money to the suspects.

Officers arrived at the market  and located  both the mother and father in the parking lot.

The parents had thousands of dollars in their possession and were preparing to wire the money to the suspects.

Officers were eventually able to contact the daughter and confirm that the threats were a phone scam.

“We would like to remind the public about this ongoing phone scam. The public is advised to be suspicious of any telephone call where the caller imposes a problem or crisis and the only solution is to electronically transfer money or purchase a prepaid gift card. If you receive a suspicious phone call of this nature, you are encouraged to report it to law enforcement,” the OXPD said in a press released.

According to the authorities these fraudulent schemes can be prevented by remaining well informed, therefore they ask the community to share any information with friends, family, and neighbors.

Since these type of scams are happening more and more often, the FBI has provides some prevention tips to avoid becoming a victim of this extortion scheme.

The Federal agency advise to be aware of the following possible indicators:

Incoming calls come from an outside area code.

Calls do not come from the injured or kidnapped victim’s phone.

Callers go to great lengths to keep you on the phone.

Callers prevent you from calling or locating the “kidnapped” victim.

Ransom money is only accepted via wire transfer service.

SCAMS ALSO IN SB

But not only in Oxnard the heavy wave of scams are taking place.

In Santa Barbara the local County Sheriff’s Office has recently received a large number of reports county-wide regarding several different familiar phone scams.

According to the Sheriff’s Office the most active scam right now is the Social Security one and residents have lost thousands of dollars.

“Just this week, a resident lost $11,000 due to this scam”, they informed in a press released.

Authorities advice in the Social Security scheme, the caller claims to be with the Social Security Administration and often provides a name and badge number.

The caller claims that the victim’s social security number has been compromised and connected with some criminal activity.

In one instance, the victim was told that her social security number was found in a car in Texas, along with some drugs and bloodstains.

The caller claims that the victim’s bank account is in danger, and that the victim must quickly go to the bank, take out the money, put it into gift cards.

The call usually begins as a recorded phone call that states the victim’s social security number has been suspended and you will lose all of his/her benefits.

The recording prompts the receiver of the call to press a number on the telephone to be connected to a live person.

“Furthermore, if you do not respond they threaten that your social security number will be permanently blocked or your bank accounts will be seized, which is not true,” the SBCSO said.

Some of the tips to stay alert and not become one of the thousand of victims that every year loose hundred of thousands of dollars due to these type of schemes are:

The Social Security Administration will never call to threaten benefits or tell to wire money, send cash or put money on gift cards.

You do not have to verify your social security number to anyone who initiates a call with you.

Never give any part of your social security number, bank account information or credit card number to anyone who contacts you.

“We also continue to see the scam where the caller poses as a Sheriff’s deputy and tells the resident that there is a bench warrant issued for their arrest because they did not show up for jury duty.  If you receive any phone call where you are being asked for money or identifying information, you should immediately hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency where the caller claims to be calling from to verify the information.  The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents that our agency does not call residents over the phone to notify them of a warrant and we do not take any payments of any kind over the phone.”

The authorities also, mentioned that with so many technology in the world scammer can duplicate the actual phone number of the Social Security Administration by using a special application or computer driven program.

“If you are worried the call may be a scam hang-up immediately. The best practice is to only give personal identifying information if you initiate the call first and after you have verified the phone number.”

The real phone number for the Social Security Administration is (800) 772-1213.

DEMOCRATS PUSH FOR VANDENBERG

On Tuesday Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24), U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) wrote a letter urging the Secretary of the Air Force, Heather Wilson, to designate Vandenberg Air Force Base as U.S. Space Command Headquarters.

“Vandenberg’s existing space-related missions and assets, as well as its proximity to the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) and numerous contractors who support the nation’s national security space enterprise, including space operations, offer Space Command unique and unparalleled advantages,” wrote Carbajal, Feinstein, and Harris.

This is a move to push the pledge from California’s politicians after the Air Force released, on May 14, its six candidates for the newly-reconstituted U.S. Space Command as a functional Unified Combatant Command.

The six official bases, selected through the Air Force strategic basing process, are: Vandenberg Air Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, Buckley Air Force Base, and Redstone Arsenal.

In the letter they also pitch the fact that Vandenberg is also proximate to the SMC at Los Angeles Air Force Base.

For Mr. Carbajal, who’s district includes SLO, Santa Barbara and parts of Ventura county, the CSpOC at Vandenberg is already a leader for the space missions and military coordination between America’s greatest allies.

“Vandenberg’s extensive existing infrastructure and industry, beautiful region to attract top-tier talent, and proven launch capabilities would make it an ideal headquarters for USSPACECOM. Not only will it strengthen our national security in space, but it will also help grow our local economy. We would welcome the command to the Central Coast,” he said.

Secretary Wilson’s final decision is expected for late Summer or Fall of this year.

“As you know, SMC is charged with developing and delivering the nation’s space assets, and it does so by working with numerous industry partners located nearby.  Ultimately, California hosts the nation’s premier workforce for aerospace engineering and innovation, which would offer Space Command an unparalleled talent pool for defending our national interests in space,” they state in the letter.
