SCAM CALLS HIT THE CENTRAL COAST

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

She was last seen driving southbound on Kellogg Avenue.

Fake inspectors acting like they work for a local fire department have been able to fool some unsuspecting businesses.

Cash has been lost and an alert has gone out.

Santa Barbara City Fire Inspector Ryan DiGuilio says several agencies have been notified of the scam.

He says some of the businesses hit have lost, in some cases, $300 or more by the phony team of two men.

It’s quick work, with a visual look around key areas, and then paperwork is written up.

«They go into the businesses saying they need to do visual inspections  of their exit signs, panic hardware on their doors, their sprinkler systems, their fire extinguisher and they ask these people to sign a  work order.  They get billed a couple of days later for that work,» said DiGuilio.

Local agencies never do that, he said.

Their credentials including proper identification, badges and a fire truck are usually all present.

«We will be more than happy to show you our fire engine that’s parked near the business and give you more of a peace of mind of why we are there and what we are doing there.»

Among the businesses recently contacted by the unauthorized inspectors, a blended drink shop, and a clothing store.

The suspects have been reported in many areas including SB, Goleta and Lompoc.

To help identify fire agencies or contractors working for them here are some tips:

1.  Perform a background check on the fire inspection company. Only hire a contractor who has a valid California Contractor’s license and insurance.

2.  Check with the CA Contractors State License Board.

3.   Ask the contractor which services he will provide and how much it will cost. Request that they leave any defective parts.

4.  Request to see their California State Fire Marshal fire extinguisher license with photo identification.
