Video of a man giving a packet of cash to a brother of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had the president, who has made the fight against corruption his signature issue, on the defensive on Friday, vowing that there would be no coverup.

The image first reported by journalist Carlos Loret de Mola shows David León handing the equivalent of $7,500 to Martín Jesús López Obrador in 2015, some three years before the president was elected.

León is heard saying on the video that the cash was from “my savings” and telling the president’s brother, “I’ll make a note of it,” to which Martín Jesús López Obrador replies “No, buddy. We’ll write that off.”

Léon, who served as head of the federal civil defense office in 2018 and 2019, later wrote in his Twitter account that “the money mentioned there was part of my personal savings and it was a loan.”

But the brother’s comment on the video suggested he might not have intended to pay it back.

It was not immediately clear if had, or what the loan was for.

The president said he was told his was a personal loan, and said he hadn’t seen Martín Jesús in several years.

López Obrador won office in 2018 on his pledge to fight corruption and live austerely, something he personally has done, but questions have been raised about his family.

The report was reminiscent of another 2015 video that showed another of the president’s brothers, Pío López Obrador, receiving a bundle of cash from León.

That video was also released last year by Loret de Mola.

Shady financial dealings by Mexican presidents and their relatives have dogged the country for decades, but they almost always involve huge amounts of money or property.

“If my brother has committed any crime, or anybody has, I won’t cover up for them,” the president said Friday.

“It s quite clear that if someone commits a crime, who it is, they should be punished.”

Senators from the opposition National Action Party wrote in a statement that “López Obrador’s family is full of corrupt individuals who should be standing before a judge, but who enjoy impunity given to them by the president.”

HONDURAS

A total of five residents of a town in Honduras were arrested Friday for the brutal mob slaying of an Italian man.

Edgardo Barahona, a spokesman for the Public Safety Department, said more possible suspects were being sought in the killing of the Italian.

The victim was identified as Giorgio Scanu, video of the killing last Thursday showed that dozens of people surrounded Scanu’s home, while some attackers went inside and killed him with stones, machetes and sticks.

Residents claimed the Italian man had killed another resident of the town of Yusguare. They later burned part of the house as his body lay inside.

Barahona said a complaint had been filed against the Italian for allegedly killing a local man during an argument over damage to his property, but residents became enraged when police did not immediately arrest Scanu.

“People were angry the Italian was not immediately arrested… but we cannot carry out an arrest without a warrant. It was being initially investigated, because there was a complaint, but there has to be evidence. That was what unleashed this whole problem.” Barahona said.

Yusguare is near the city of Choluteca, close to the border with neighboring Nicaragua.

Yusguare Mayor Edas Mauricio Turcios said “this is something unexpected for us.”

“After seeing the videos you are shocked, because this is a quiet town, not conflictive, and these types of scenes are hard to comprehend,” Turcios said.

HAITI

Haiti has asked for foreign troops to be sent to the country to protect key infrastructure after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

The request was sent by the government to the US and the UN, but the US says it has no plans to offer military assistance «at this time».

Haitian police earlier said a group of 28 foreign mercenaries killed the president last Wednesday.

After a gun battle in the capital Port-au-Prince, 17 of them were detained.

Some of the group, which Haiti says included retired Colombian soldiers, were held at the house they were using, others after entering Taiwan’s diplomatic compound, the police said.

Investigations stated three suspects were killed by police, and eight others are still being sought.

Although the US will not offer troops, it said on Friday it was sending FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials to Haiti to help in the investigation.

The UN Security Council would have to approve any plan to send international troops to Haiti under UN auspices.

The killing has triggered some civil unrest in Haiti, the poorest nation in America.

A state of emergency remains in force across the country and it is unclear who is in effective charge of the country’s government.

Bloodied and bruised, arrested suspects were shown to the media on Thursday, along with a slew of seized weapons.

It is still unclear who organized the attack and with what motive, but there is some evidence showing that might have been ordered by the CIA.

The attack took place in the early hours on 7 July, when gunmen broke into the president’s home, shooting him dead and wounding his wife.

Mr Moïse, 53, was found lying on his back with 12 bullet wounds and a gouged eye, according to the authorities.

Martine Moïse, 47, was seriously wounded and is in a stable condition after being flown to Florida for treatment.

Police said the hit squad included mainly Colombians, along with two Haitian-Americans.

Found in the suspects’ possession were firearms, sets of US dollar bills, the president’s personal checkbook and the server that held surveillance camera footage from his home, Le Nouvelliste newspaper reported.

Haiti confirmed that 11 of the suspects were arrested after breaking into a courtyard at its compound.

Angry civilians had joined the search for the gunmen, and helped police track down some who were hiding in bushes.

The crowd set fire to three of the suspects’ cars and destroyed evidence.

Police chief Léon Charles called for calm, saying the public should not take the law into their own hands.
