Victims and survivors of violence in eastern Ventura County will soon have expanded access to support services through a new Family Justice Center that will be located on the campus of California Lutheran University.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and California Lutheran University announced the partnership after the Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved a lease agreement Aug. 4 for a building at 26 Faculty St. The new center is expected to provide a centralized location where survivors can receive comprehensive services in a safe and welcoming environment.
The East County Family Justice Center will serve individuals affected by domestic violence, elder and dependent adult abuse, sexual assault, child molestation, child abuse, human trafficking and hate crimes.
One-Stop Support for Survivors
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said the new location reflects the county’s commitment to making services more accessible while strengthening community partnerships.
“The Ventura County Family Justice Center is built on the belief that no survivor should have to navigate trauma alone,” Nasarenko said. “California Lutheran University has been an outstanding community partner for many years, and we are grateful for their commitment to helping bring these vital services closer to the individuals and families who need them most.”
The Family Justice Center provides free walk-in services regardless of whether a crime has been reported to law enforcement. Staff assist survivors with obtaining restraining orders and connecting them with government agencies, community organizations and emergency shelter.
Through the Ventura County Family Justice Center Foundation, victims can also receive assistance with essential needs, including clothing, groceries, cell phones and other necessities designed to promote long-term safety and stability.
The new Thousand Oaks location is expected to improve access for residents across East Ventura County while expanding opportunities for collaboration between the university and the Family Justice Center.
Partnership Expands Education and Community Programs
California Lutheran University President John A. Nunes said the partnership aligns with the university’s mission to serve vulnerable members of the community.
“California Lutheran University is honored to welcome the East County Family Justice Center to our campus,” Nunes said. “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to serving the most vulnerable in our community and advances justice, compassion and healing through meaningful collaboration between the center and our students, faculty and academic programs.”
The partnership builds on years of collaboration between the university and the Family Justice Center. California Lutheran students have volunteered with the organization, served as counselors at Camp Hope for children impacted by domestic violence and other crimes, and participated in research projects focused on improving outcomes for victims.
The university also hosted the Family Justice Center’s 2024 strategic retreat, where community leaders worked to develop plans for establishing an East County location.
Officials said the campus setting will create additional opportunities for student internships, academic partnerships and youth programming. Outdoor and athletic facilities will also be available for activities serving children and families affected by violence.
The District Attorney’s Office and California Lutheran University thanked the Ventura County Board of Supervisors for supporting programs that improve services for victims and families throughout the county.
An opening date for the East County Family Justice Center has not yet been announced. Officials said the facility will open after renovation work at the site is completed.
