Garantías contractuales más fuertes para abordar los problemas de seguridad de los hospitales;

Un acuerdo para reunirse con RN y estudiar el impacto de cualquier reducción de personal de apoyo (no RN);

On Monday, Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley announced that Nicholas Burnell Hart, 27, was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison.

«This successful prosecution was the result of an exemplary investigation conducted by members of the Santa Barbara Police Department and Senior Deputy District Attorney Ben Ladinig,» Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley said in a press release.

She also stated that this case is another painful reminder of the extreme dangers of driving while intoxicated, “which in this case resulted in a tragic loss of life.»

On January 23, 2018, Hart struck and killed Ted Johnson as he was crossing State Street at a crosswalk.

Mr. Johnson died a week later from his injuries.

The victim, who lived at the Casa Dorinda retirement community on Hot Springs Road, was staying in a nearby hotel while under evacuations caused by the January 9 debris flows in Montecito.

NURSES STOPPED STRIKES

Multiple planned strikes were called off Monday by nurses after a tentative agreement was reached between the Nurses’ Union, SEIU Local 121RN, and their employer, Dignity Health.

The agreement came after five intense months of negotiations between nurses and hospital management.

The contract makes improvements to workplace and patient care issues, things that nurses have vocally requested.

Other requests include plans to bolster hospital security and to ensure safe nurse-to-patient ratios are maintained.

The contract also includes the prevention of «floating» nurses to certain departments in the hospital unless they have been specifically trained and validated to work there.

Pickets held by nurses at Dignity facilities in recent weeks highlighted what nurses say were concerns about patient safety and hospital security.

Days before the latest rounds of negotiations were to be held, many elected officials, including five Presidential candidates, took to Twitter to voice their support for the nurses’ push to improve security and patient safety.

Under the terms of the tentative agreement, the new contract provides these provisions that impact patient and nurse safety:

Stronger contractual guarantees to address the hospitals’ security problems;

An agreement to meet with RNs and study the impact of any reduction of support (non-RN) staff;

Other safe staffing improvements, such as ensuring that the RN responsible for handling incoming ambulances is not also give a patient load.

In the past, nurses have used their ability to strike in order to negotiate for better working conditions and better care of patients.

AMERICAN IDOL

Hundreds of aspiring singers lined up at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Barbara to sing in front of American Idol producers for the chance to compete on the nationally televised hit show on ABC.

The show came to Santa Barbara looking for new talent, in part, to honor American Idol judge Katy Perry, who grew up here.

The judges, including Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were not on hand for the auditions.

But, those who made it past the first round, will likely encounter the all-stars in the second round.

Katy Perry’s father, Keith Hudson rolled up to surprise the crowd, and gave some advice and encouragement to the nervous and excited performers standing in line.

Hudson, who still lives in Santa Barbara, said being a superstar isn’t easy.

«You gotta be very tough. A lot of stuff goes with it, it’s not just your talent,» Hudson said.

American Idol contestant hopeful Sarah Simmons said Katy Perry is an inspiration to all the up-and-comers in the industry.

«She’s so bubbly and so open and honest about who she is and what she stands for,» said Sarah Simmons who drove up from Los Angeles to audition.

» The all new season of American Idol on ABC airs in Spring 2020.

PLANE CRASHES IN SB

A plane that took off from the Santa Maria Airport late Sunday night crash-landed at the Santa Barbara Airport about an hour after take off.

The private C-130 aircraft landed roughly on an airport runway at around 11 p.m. Santa Barbara County Fire officials said there were seven people onboard the plane when it crashed.

All seven were uninjured.

Part of a wing broke off on impact and witnesses said fuel was spilling from the aircraft. The fire caused by the crash was swiftly put out by firefighters with the use of foam.

Plane began day in Hawaii, headed to Phoenix

The plane was en route to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Agency, which spoke to CBS News.

The plane had taken off from the Hilo International Airport in Hawaii earlier Sunday morning and landed in Santa Maria at around 9 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.com.

Santa Maria Airport general manager Chris Hastert said he saw a C-130 aircraft Sunday night. While he could not confirm it was the same plane, he said that the possibility it was the same plane was «very likely.»

Hastert said C-130 planes do not typically land or take off from the Santa Maria Airport at night, which increases the possibility that the aircraft he saw, was the same as the one that had crashed.

According to Hastert, aircraft that depart from Hawaii will stop in Santa Maria, because of its proximity to the island. He said the airport is the closest in California for Hawaiian flights.
