This summer, the City of Ventura’s Public Works department is gearing up for a series of capital improvement projects designed to improve and maintain the City’s infrastructure.

This includes repair and improvement efforts for City streets, sidewalks, sewers, storm drains, water, and wastewater services.

City Public Works Director Phil Nelson stated the City is committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure services and “programs that promote active and healthy communities.”

“The City can maintain local streets and complete repair projects more quickly thanks to additional funding provided by SB-1 and Measure O; and without these voter-driven initiatives, this would not be possible,” he said.

Street resurfacing projects planned throughout the City include Ralston Street from Portola Road to Victoria Avenue; Victoria Avenue from Telephone Road to Highway 126; Walker Street and Moon Drive from Dowell Drive to Victoria Avenue; Johnson Drive from Bristol Road to Telephone Road; and Telephone Road from Victoria Avenue to Kimball Road. Nelson also informed that street and sidewalk repair projects will include accessibility enhancements, focusing on sidewalk replacements in the City’s eastside communities, and continuing with the second phase of pedestrian improvements from the westside to midtown in the City’s downtown and wellness districts.

Upcoming planned water and drainage projects consist of waterline replacements in the Pierpont community, completion of two water well installations near Ventura Boulevard and Hill Road, and drainage improvements near Hall Canyon, the City announced in a press release.

In a press release the City of Ventura stated is grateful with the community in advance “for their patience and cooperation during the completion of these projects”.

The authorities said due to the nature of various construction work and to ensure public safety, lane closures will be in effect around the project areas.

Message boards will be posted in each direction to inform motorists and residents of upcoming lane closures. Residents are asked to reduce their speed in construction zones.

The City’s Public Works Department conducts a citywide effort to identify the most critical infrastructure priorities over the next six years and establishes a two-year work plan that is updated annually by the City Council by April 1.

RASH OF THEFT OF CATALYTIC CONVERTERS IN GOLETA

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBCSO) informed that the past week there has been a rash of thefts of catalytic converters in the Goleta area.

Several of the thefts occurred last Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The thefts were in the following areas; 300-block of Valdez, Armitos at Kellogg, 5200-block of San Simeon, 700-block of Walnut Lane, 6100-block of Stow Canyon, 6200-block of Momouth, 5000-block of Douglas and the 500-block of Amherst.

The vehicles that were targeted were Ford trucks, a Chevrolet truck and a Honda Element.

These thefts are similar to thefts that were recently reported by Ventura Police Department and Oxnard Police where Ford F250 trucks and Honda Elements were also targeted.

The SBCSO said the theft of converters is popular because they can be easily removed, they do not have identifying marks like serial numbers, and the components are made up of precious metals that can be resold to recyclers.

“There are steps that can be taken to thwart these thefts including; parking inside a garage or secured yard, installing motion detector lights near parking areas, installing a catalytic converter protection device, and educating neighbors to be on the look-out for thieves,” the authorities said.

The SBCSO is interested in any videos that may have captured these thefts and are encouraging residents to call dispatch immediately if they see suspicious subjects around or underneath vehicles at, 805.683.2724 for non-emergency calls and 911 for emergencies.

SM PARK VANDALIZED

The City of Santa Maria informed that sections of the Rotary Centennial Park were found ripped up including trails, landscaping and the sports field over the weekend.

Tracks of a large truck were left behind where it appeared to have driven through the trails, down a landscaped hill and onto the sports field.

Donut-shaped tracks were also left on the field where parts of the grass were damaged.

Parkgoers shared on site how much they depend on the park for exercise and fresh air especially during COVID-19 when other places are closed.
