On June 27, 2025, Oxnard Police Officers from the Neighborhood Policing Team received information about fireworks being sold from a pickup truck in north Oxnard. Officers obtained video footage showing a suspect involved in selling fireworks stored in a vehicle.
On June 28, 2025, while officers were conducting fireworks enforcement, the pickup truck was located parked on a street. Though unoccupied, a search revealed more than 1,200 pounds of illegal and dangerous fireworks inside. The suspect has been identified, and the investigation is ongoing. The truck was towed and the fireworks stored securely.
All fireworks are illegal in Oxnard. Nonetheless, in the weeks leading up to July 4, the Oxnard Police Department receives numerous complaints. In 2024, there were 858 fireworks-related calls to the Dispatch Center, along with 304 additional tips via the hotline and email. On July 4 alone, 340 complaints were made between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.
In total, 56 citations were issued in 2024, including 31 on July 4. Enforcement efforts resulted in the seizure of 1,909 pounds of illegal fireworks last year.
Fireworks are not only a nuisance—they pose serious safety risks. Each year, they cause structural fires and significant emotional distress, especially for residents with PTSD and for pets. Many pet owners resort to sedatives to calm their animals during the celebrations.
Because of these risks, the Oxnard Police Department enforces a zero-tolerance policy toward fireworks violations. While catching offenders is challenging, the department prioritizes deploying maximum resources for enforcement. Last year, that resulted in dozens of citations.
Violators face fines from $250 to $1,000. “Safe and Sane” fireworks, such as sparklers, carry a $250 fine; “Dangerous” fireworks, like M80s or mortars, carry a $1,000 fine.
Authorities urge residents to celebrate the holiday safely and respectfully—without fireworks.
